As the PM drags her heels out of No 10 slowly enough to have been in office for (just) longer than Gordon Brown, the record she leaves behind wouldn’t look out of place in the Thread of Shame. What cultural reference points would be a suitable tribute to her?
May, I be amazed?
As the (division) bell rings, the May polespins?
Theresa place?
Nuts in May?
What kind of record?
Looks reasonable on the surface; but when you get under the skin, a real vein of nastiness, possibly accompanied by incompetence.
“My Way” – Sid Vicious, perhaps?
‘Twat’- John Cooper Clarke
It’s not a pun, but you’d be hard pressed not to find it deeply prescient.
Buzzcocks offer a couple of possibilities
Oh Shit
Somethings Gone Wrong Again
If you can imagine Cliff singing the tender ballad “Miss You Nights”. You don’t like the song, or Cliff, but boy he sings that song very well. Grudgingly you acknowledge that Cliff does and should have fans.
Now imagine Jack Douglas, not playing for laughs, but in a lovely formal suit, singing “Miss You Nights”. Before long (about 20 seconds) it’s already a complete mess – twitching delivery, falling over, forgetting the words and pretending everything’s under control. There’s a banana skin on the ground in full view. Mid-song he stands on it and “wa-hey-heyyy” he’s on his arse again, gets up abruptly, glasses askew. He’s pretty much given up on the song now and is shouting “gerrofff!” to no one. Loyal fans give him a standing ovation as if he’s as good as Cliff. He does this every night for about three years. Each time, you hope it goes well for him but each time it’s a total disaster and he never finishes the song.
Brilliant!
Thanks @tiggerlion
Let me echo @Tiggerlion completely, @Black-Celebration. I meant to applaud you earlier. You made something rather special out of my off-the-cuff, rather flip response to May’s finally prising her fingernails away from the steering wheel, as the engine of government sat revving away in her own Brexit cul-de-sac.
Thanks!
Prophets of Rage by Public Enemy, purely because it starts with
-“You’re quite hostile”
-“I got a right to be hostile! My people are being persecuted!”
Gove as our next Prime Minister. Cripes!
Pretty much all the candidates inspire a Cripes response
Although Gove is probably the biggest.
The again, Esther McVey …
Matt Hancock.
I had thought that DC was the least intellectually impressive Prime Minister we’d ever had. Dude’s like Sophocles compared to some of these no-marks.
Any thoughts on Rory Stewart?
Clever and civilised. The Party probably hates him.
And a hell of a CV. Gets my vote (or would if I had one) for least worst.
Like I said, he doesn’t stand a chance when it’s a decision made by racist pensioners.
Appears principled. Also appears to have accepted the mantle of ‘stop Boris’ candidate. That’s principled enough for me.
He’s got a lovely mouth.
I liken her spell as Prime Minister to a David Beckham England appearance.
She thought it was enough to try really hard and appear patriotic. No doubt, like Beckham, she’ll bemoan bad luck.
I want a little bit more from a Prime Minister, or an England footballer for that matter, than simply being keen.
I rather think she’s exactly the same person now that she was in the 6th Form Common Room. See also Cameron, Johnson, Rees-Mogg ….
She missed the 60s n’all.
She also missed the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, ’00s and ’10s. Like a lot of politicians she lives in a world of her own. Getting to the top requires a hard shell – even self-delusion. Being in any way aware of your own limitations is just not the done thing. Does Sajid Javid have any idea how preposterous he is? No. There he is, feet planted ten feet apart, thinking he is going to be the greatest PM since Palmerston.
Great comment by Rawnsley in the Absurder yesterday:
I don’t know about you, but I am surprised that Chris Grayling has not yet announced that he is a candidate for the Tory leadership. You might object that his cabinet career has been distinguished by the opposite of success, but the lack of any demonstrable qualification to be prime minister isn’t holding back many others.
