It’s notable that Maxi Jazz achieves a rare sort of immortality in that Faithless’ best album Reverence begins with the words “I am Maxi Jazz”.
This doesn’t happen that much on group records; “Straight outta Compton/ Crazy ass ———- named Ice Cube” – yes, “My name is Andy Partridge and I’m a speccy herbert from Swindon” – not so much..
I think Johnny Cash started that sort of thing with ‘Hello… I’m Johnny Cash…’ at the start of live concerts/albums. Understated, unnecessary yet brilliant!
Oh, solo artists are always full of themselves (and one suspects Mr Cube had an eye on his future solo career there), but usually the uneasy “crabs in a pot” style jealousies of band mates would stand in the way of such a personal opening statement, non?
Really sad news. The Significant Cultural Death toll is assuming almost 2016 proportions, isn’t it?

Sorry, but this is only going to get worse in the next couple of years given the age of some of the significant folks from the 1960s-70s.
These people in their 50s and 60s have no business leaving us now though.
Faithless are not the kind of thing I’d normally go to see live but when they played the Cambridge Corn Exchange, I did. And they were fantastic.

And overdubbed later. Like most of the good stuff on “live” albums….
