I hadn’t heard about this previously, so don’t know if it’s only just been announced, but the notoriously flight-averse Matthew Sweet is playing a rare UK gig next month, Tuesday 18th December at the Islington Assembly Hall… he’s promoting his recent-ish Tomorrow’s Daughter album, but recent gig reviews suggest a career-spanning setlist, so it’s an early Christmas present for us powerpoppers amongst us!

I’d love him to do a Sid ‘n’ Susie tour with the goddess Susanna Hoffs.
Yes please!
Oh yes. I enjoy their Under the Covers albums, but more often than not I skip the ones which Sweet sings.
Actually I prefer the “Susie” songs, too, I thought I was the only one!
I think the versions are mostly so faithful to the originals, that Sweet’s songs suffer in comparison, whereas the ones Hoffs sings have a different vibe with a female voice (I think they’re nearly all usually male-sung songs)… Roxy’s “More Than This” is a particular favourite…
Blimey, there’s a box set of 4 CDs!
Should I invest my hard earned £13 ? Or is it likely to be one of those “one play” albums only? I’ve only got one Matthew Sweet album, Altered Beast and nothing by the Bangles but these keep getting good reviews.
Gits, I’ve only gorn and ordered it!
I trust that you’re loving it…
You could have had mine for less than that – it has been played once.
Sufficiently close to the originals to be considered one of those K-Tel top 20 chart
albums.
Safe and boring.
Yes well. It’s ok. A couple of excellent interpretations but as you say a bit K-Tel. Shame.
It’s worth it for the good tracks, less so the less good ones, which tend to be the later ones and thus more faithful to the originals, the ambient style being similar to that period.
It’s out for delivery today somehow. Don’t think I’ve got Prime, weird.
long time lurker (since the previous place) first time ever comment and i just wanted to say thank you to metal mickey for the heads-up about the Matthew Sweet gig on Tuesday night.
It was a fantastic evening of powerpop and harmony vocals and the gig was well worth the trip up to that london from the SW.
The size of the audience reinforced how niche Matthew Sweet is though. Probably less than 300 to 400 people in the room for his first gig in the UK in 18? years.
Made me think about how many other bands i have seen in london where everyone in the room is probably most of their UK fan base.
Welcome to posting @88mph
