Not sure when they first appeared (the Grey Album ?), but over the years there have been many mashups of songs. When they are done well they can be creative masterpieces that blend the two songs or song / video seamlessly, leaving you wondering “how the hell did they do that?”.
Just came across this mashup (promoted by none other then Nile Rodgers) that blends Chic’s “Good Times” with Iron Maiden’s “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”, which I think is fabulous.
Any other good ones out there….. over to you.
one of the first to get an official release I think
Kylie’s a serial masher-upper. This is so cool…
Go Home Productions are my go to Mash Up providers:
Virgin O’Riley (The Who vs Madonna)
They are good, aren’t they?
Ray Of Gob (Madonna vs Sex Pistols)
The essence of a good mashup being two diametrically opposed acts
Boogie Removal Machine
(The Cult / Madonna / Earth, Wind & Fire)
Californian Maneater
(Hall & Oates vs The Eagles)
LL Cool J vs Dexys
Prince vs Kate Bush
That’s ace!
Supertramp vs Gnarls Barkley
That’s a really good mix. Though I like it when Gnarls connects to Marvin – the combination matches so well and was one of the first mashups I heard:
B52’s vs Madonna
Eazy E vs Johnny Cash
Takes a while to get going, but very clever when it does
Seal vs Radiohead vs The Doors vs Miles Davis
This would be my thread favourite if there was a bit more Miles.
Wonder if it would have been possible to replace the Doors organ with the electric piano arpeggio – or part of it – from Riders On the Storm. And yes, more Miles!
These things seem to work quite well with rappers….
This is my favourite at the moment.
I did my own a few months ago. Ian Gillan sings ‘Smoke on the Water’ over Steely Dan’s ‘Do It Again’. Worked a treat, but I got a cease and desist from Steely Dan’s people…
I would love to know the actual mechanics of how you do these – is it just straight mixing / fading in and out, cut and paste elements of the song, require isolation of lyrics / music etc etc……
I agree with you @Chrisf.
A good place to start for me is to find an interview or two with Watford-based Mark Vidler aka Go Home Productions.
He’s been doing mash ups since 2002 and several have been approved by the artists.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Go_Home_Productions
He’s recently been working on a project called Orchestra of Samples.

An interview with them
https://www.falmouthpacket.co.uk/news/16254547.interview-with-audiovisual-sampling-duo-addictive-tv/
I stumbled this: a radio show in Minneapolis, based on sampled music.: Some Assembly Rerquired.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Some_Assembly_Required_(radio_program)
Mr Vidler is also a guest on The Word Podcast #55 – I recall he discusses technique among other things.
I did mine in GarageBand, and it was fairly simple because I found a ‘vocal only’ version of SOTW online, it’s in the same key (and roughly the same tempo) as DIA. As for isolating tracks, changing pitch etc – way beyond my ken. But Mark Vidler is the master.
My last thread was a link to the rave.dj website where you can mix your own videos – just by selecting two and letting their cunning al gore rhythms have at them. I’ve had endless fun trying it out – Black dog vs Balack eyed Dog, anyone? But this is my pinnacle, I think – Dua Lipa vs. Queen.
That is truly excellent – genuinely funny.
I agree with Rigid about the wonderful Go Home Productions. They did the end of the festival party at Roskilde one year. It was a treat.
This magnificent meeting between Pistols and Peniston made a Best of the Year List in the Word.
Here is something more recent: Hall and Oates vs The Eagles.
As far as I’m concerned any discussion of mashups begins and ends with Slayer vs Benny Hill:
An oldie, but a goldie.
That’s flipping fantastic 😂
Which reminds me of this:
Who knew that putting Quiet Riot together with Kool and the Gang would be a good idea but it is.
Queen And Lynyrd Skynyrd seems to work as well.
And finally this is what happens when someone puts a shedload of rock songs into the mix.
That’s a bit of a classic
Petula Clark vs Billy Joel – Downtown Girl
Sigur Ros vs The Supremes – Stop! In The Name Of Njosnavelin
It seems that DJ RozRoz who mashed the Supremes and the Ros in one to watch.
Here is Massive Attack vs Rod the Mod.
The Beatles vs Massive Attack [with a pinch of Kate Bush] – Golden Teardrops
Ah now lads, come on! Paperback Believer!
I always liked this one
I always laugh when I see that clip of Malcolm Young wrestling that Gretsch White Falcon. It looks like a comedy prop on him.
Great mashup.
Mashups of the Beatles “Revolver”? Here they are, all twelve of ’em. Fairly crude and some better-sounding than others.
Mash ups are one of my favourite things. In August 2017, as part of a yearlong listening project, I did a month of mash ups – several of which are above. Revisiting it, this is one of my favourites
This was another great one – that took me back to my childhood with three great songs in one

If you don’t know The Kleptones, I can highly recommend them:
Their version of Bohemian Rhapsody is very silly indeed.
I did enjoy that Janis and Back one. One of the comments described it as a Lenlow mashup, which led me to Bootie, which is a weekly San Francisco club night devoted to mashups and bootlegs.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootie_(club_night)
This should keep me busy for the next hour!
To my mind, mashups are best heard in a bar or a club or at a gig after a few drinks. The pleasurable surprise of finding what has been put together is a lot of the fun.
The Temptations vs Deadmau5 works rather well.
I read about it here.
https://www.theguardian.com/music/2011/jan/20/click-to-download-best-of-bootie
Iggy Pop vs Peggy Lee. I have the Mashed CD and sometimes DJ this one.
Moseley Moles, you comment that “The essence of a good mashup being two diametrically opposed acts”. and I agree the frisson of opposites meeting is stupendous as in Chic and Iron Maiden, The Cult Vs Earth Wind and Fire or Pistols Vs Peniston.
But there are couple of clips here, such as Bare necessities, Queen and Carpenters or Petula Clarke, Billy Joel and Dorothy and Toto, where the musical mix plus an ingenious video have worked nicely for me.
Daniel Bisell, aka DanB, who did the latter seems to be a very imaginative, , creative chap.
Here he does an English version of the theme from a 1970s Japanese Spiderman TV show.
Dj RozRoz is another masher from this thread, whose work I want to see more of.
Or how about The Prodigy vs Lady Gaga
Lots at Mashup-Charts.com including the massively AW-friendly “Breathe With Me ‘Til Dawn”:
https://www.mashup-charts.com/pink-floyd-vs-judie-tzuke-breathe-with-me-till-dawn/
The Mash Up Charts! Well I never!
This a mash up …of sorts, Great fun anyway
Come to think of it, how many mashes did this inspire?
Love these. Here’s Pink Floyd vs The Bee Gees:
For the fun of it, I made a Mash ups playlist….
