Well, this is rather lovely – Mary Chapin Carpenter & The Mountain Goats do Put The Message In The Box.
Karl Wallinger is still much missed round these parts.

Excellent cover!
I went past his house on a bus once, I didn’t know it was his at the time, it was called something like Seaview Cottage. I remember chuckling to myself as it was something you didn’t expect to see in Central London.
Alan Moore calls his home Sea View. It’s a terraced house in Northampton.
He’s probably got a flying sub in there…
MCC’s last few albums have been dull as ditchwater, so this is a welcome bit of upbeatness. Good cover too.
Utter bollocks.
Mary Chapin Carpenter is at a career high.
Her last two albums, The Dirt And The Stars and Personal History rank among her very best work.
Also the album where she collaborated with Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart Looking For The Thread is pretty damn fine too.
What Carl says. The cover is fine but a tad unadventurous. It pales to the original.
Nah! Too soporific for me I’m afraid, with every song sounding much the same. I preferred her earlier stuff where there was more light and shade and she rocked out a little more.
Totally agree @Carl as you know. Her recent output has been incredible.
I’m with Carl and Retro on this. The Dirt and The Stars is one of my favourite albums of recent years. I also like this cover – nothing earth shattering but pretty fine
Maybe I should give those last couple a listen. I bailed out after buying seven of her CDs because I thought she had become dull and samey and that was back in the 90s. I would be surprised if she has ever bettered Come On Come On though.
Come on Come on was my MCC starting point and I do concur it is perhaps her best album along with Stones in the Road but Dirt and the stars is superb.
She has mellowed, it’s true, but for all the upbeat stompers she now eschews, her voice is now pure syrup for the languid slowies she excels at.
