This song meant a lot to me when i first heard it. As we head into winter, its atmosphere and lyrics are a fitting epitaph to a underestimated songwriter

Musings on the byways of popular culture
Always struck me an enigmatic cat. In his last few interviews he seemed pretty happy with his lot. Admirable in itself. Right on Marty!
Great song. I’m not familiar with the original, I only know it from the cover version by Rickie Lee Jones which is haunting.
I got into JA around the same time I got into Love and Marty Balin was of course the driving force behind the band.
R.I.P. Marty.
I always thought of Marty Balin as the soul and solid core around which the more theatrical parts of the Airplane revolved. Unafraid to pause while the world around him swirled and shouted, take a good look at his own experience and quietly distill it and capture it in song. A true original. RIP

Apparently CBTM and this beautiful song were knocked off in a couple of hours cos they needed songs to complete the album. Or so Grace Slick told a (FB) friend of mine
