I have most of his solo output and I love his voice. His autobiography was savage and a little scary. Frankly I am surprised he lived as long as he did – has left a great legacy though.
Wednesday 23rd Feb 2022.
Bottled 1500 gold tops this morning from the Jersey girls.
Cheddar is almost ready – must book a stall at the Farmer’s Market next week.
Daisy still has mastitis, taking ages to shake off.
His first 4 or so decades seemed to have been pretty godawful but he seemed to find an inner peace as he found sobriety. Sure still seemed as scary as hell but a seemingly quietly generous man, willing to share the gift of survival. His last year sounds grim, mind, covid, comas and convulsions. Unsurprised to see he lived in Ireland. Explains quite how he came to spend so much time touring here. A truly golden gravelly voice.
I remember the news that docs had considered amputating his arm as it was infected from so many smack needles. I didn’t know he’d been an alcoholic from the age of 12. Twelve! Turns out all that stuff isn’t good for you.
Kudos due to Courtney Love, who paid for the year of rehab which saved him.
Loved the Isobel Campbell collaboration. Not explored much of his other stuff. Saw them at Rock City. They looked to have fallen out beforehand but the music & mutual respect won the day. Fantastic gig & his voice was a rib shaker when amplified.
Sad news, I was a big fan of his around the time of Dust. I read in an interview that he lived on coffee and cigarettes and tried to copy him, with dismal results. Hey, I was 16!
Sing Backwards and Weep was a glorious, coruscating read and I still feel he had a lot more to offer the world.
Very saddened by this news. I never really heard the screaming trees, but I loved his solo work and a lot of his collaborations. Never saw him live enough, if you know what I mean. The last time I did see him live was back in 2015. I could of met him after the show, but was a little too intimidated (he’s way taller than me). RIP Sir.
Despite not having a great deal of his stuff, mainly the Isobel Campbell collaborations and a Soulsavers album (Broken) which I’m listening to now, the news did hit me quite hard last night.
Someone I’d love to have seen live. What a wonderful voice.
Screaming Trees’ Dust was the great lost album of the 90s
and the later solo stuff was great as well
Co-wrote this belter
He didn’t write this one, but added his voice. From Manics last album – Blank Dairy Entry

He didn’t look great on the Dust tour (when they had Josh Homme as 2nd guitarist), but the band were fantastic. So sad.

Can only echo @stevet and his sentiments.

At least he found some peace before he went.

I’m a fan of his solo stuff and his albums with Isobel Cambell.
I know very little about him apart from the albums.
57 is way too early to depart this weary land. RIP
Very, very sad news!
I too loved the stuff he did with Isobel Campbell.

I’m a general fan, but fell in love with his music when he paired with Greg Dulli to do The Gutter Twins.
I read the news on the ABC news website at work, and the swear words were heard down the corridor.

Rest easy.

Quite simp!y he had the voice of God.
If you subscribe to Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, there’s an interview with Lanegan from 2017 which has been made available again.
Jude Rogers’ Twitter about meeting him is illuminating
Enjoyed that. Thanks for signposting.
AI anyone still mourning?

Shameless nick from Tiggs who should have copyrighted the “voice of God”.
Just seen on the Dodgers site: uneasy reading for 99p!
