Back in town again after appearing only a few months previously at the smaller Louisiana, following a common pattern this year. With a solid band in tow, and decked out in film noir red velvet, Marissa returns to Bristol to warm up a chilly Monday night with her intense, guitar-based, moody pop. Seemingly relishing going electric lead she has plenty of good songs of her own and has time to fit in a couple of covers – Cortes the Killer, and an encore of Famous Blue Raincoat.

Thekla isn’t big big, is it, Anton? Pretty medium sized hall, yet is she not massive in the states, courtesy careful product placing of her tunes in a shedload of US box sets.? And a highly rated 2016 album, as commented upon by Pencilsqueezer earlier in the year. Didn’t even know she was on tour. I note Leeds, Manchester and Brighton, all in similarly bijou halls remain, but I won’t be getting to any, mores the pity.
Ain’t it great when you discover something you didn’t know and yet can neither do anything about………
Don’t know how big she is in the states but she’s a big name in our house (oh alright just me then) and hats off to Mr Pencil as he obviously knows a good thing when he hears it. Yes she has moved up from a 120 venue (Louisiana) in June to the Thekla maybe 400 capacity and I don’t think it was full/sold out(difficult to tell from down the front)- maybe the jump to the Fleece next time ….that’s the steps the equally wonderful Meilyr Jones has done this year. Maybe Trinity (600) next? – after that you start getting to seated venues which is where I used to get off/stand up – until tonight that is as I have just got home from seeing Low, sitting down (me not them) in a church (very apt). But I digresss…..Marissa Nadler is definitely worth seeing live – the records can seem a a bit gothic doomy but live she’s quite chirpy (cf also Torres, DuBlonde, LadyHawke, Haley Bonar)
