Anyone keeping up with these, liveinthestudio fun from Ms Williams, 4 so far, 2 more to come, each 45 minute sets, with her band, tackling a different theme. So far it has been a tribute to Tom Petty, a set of Dylan songs, some southern soul encompassing Ann Peebles thru’ to Joe South and, just out, some 60’s country weepies. She and the band sound relaxed, and, sure, her voice is wracked but not as wrecked as it can be. Recommended, at $10 a shot, more for hard copy.

Shall wait for the next 2 then order the set. I love her band and personally I think her voice is fine as it is.
It’s the Southern Soul one I’m wanting.
Terrific track listing. Rainy Night? Billy Joe? Yes please.
Hope I can get the lot for less than buying them all singly – she can do little wrong for me.
Me too – I am sure there may be a bundle when she has done the last two – looking forward to hearing what they are – she is so versatile as an artist and in recent concerts I have seen her cover Springsteen, The Clash, Neil Young amongst others.
I’ve been a little disappointed with them, but that’s because I think I was expecting too much. She seems to struggle on a few of the tracks, and the band sounds okay, but not great. I think it would have been more enjoyable being in the studio watching them performing the sets (or even better, had she done them 20 years ago!). But I’m glad she’s done them and they are worth listening to. Not sure they are something I’d return to often though.
My favourite is the Tom Petty one, his songs suiting her voice. And she chose a good setlist for the Dylan one, keeping away from the usual choices, mostly choosing songs from his later years, which more suit her voice and the band.
But these sets are way, way better than the similar project Beck did a few years ago, when he covered classic albums in a day (Songs of Leonard Cohen, Oar, Kick, Velvet Underground and Nico &…another one I can’t remember). His efforts are about as listenable as the umpteen demo tapes that precede his first album. If you’re a Beck fan I wouldn’t bother searching them out!
Saw her live last year and it was a real disappointment. Band were great, but she seemed to be just going through the motions.
Took her a few songs to warm up when I saw her too. I think a little alcohol had been taken. The band were excellent though (even though the great big drummer nearly killed me as he came bursting out of the side door in a rush to flog some of their CDs before everybody left), as you say, which is another reason I was disappointed with these jukebox albums. I’m presuming it’s the same band, of course.
Both relevant points, but the band feel well bedded in here and play like a band, rather than lookatme soloists. And Lu is not obviously hammered. At Cambridge FF in 2019 both these aspects seemed in play.
The best moment at the Holmfirth gig was when she asked the audience “d’yall come from here? From Holmfirth?”, but not in a Showbiz “are there any Scots in the room?” type way, she was genuinely puzzled as to how come she managed to fill a concert venue with her fans in a tiny little town best known for being the filming location for Last of the Summer Wine.
