Found out my next door neighbour is an electrician who specialises in AV systems, I allas thought he was a builder, anyway he helped me out a few weeks back with my new LG Blurry and swapped a dodgey optical cable for me.
Unfortunately the swap meant the audio and picture were out of sync, so I gave him a call on Friday to see if he could help. He popped over and swapped the input which rectified the prob, while he was here I told him about the hum on a t/t a mate had given me.
He had a look at it but couldn’t trace where it was coming from, he also said he had a hum on one of his systems so I offered him an old Kenwood amp the mate with the t/t returned to me. He took it away and tried it, returning about 20mins later to tell me it was a bit knackered.
But thanks anyway and would I like some gear he was chucking out. Wait for it… a Marantz AV Receiver – http://us.marantz.com/DocumentMaster/US/SR4600specsheet0506.pdf and a Marantz Super Audio CD/DVD – http://us.marantz.com/DocumentMaster/US/DV7600specsheet02-06.pdf
Boy am I full of WIN!
I’ve got the CD/DVD up and running but I’m gonna need help moving my gear around and rewiring the speakers for the new amp. Still what an amazing thing to happen!
Never been a Marantz boy, tended to be Technics and Sony (for no good reason) so I’d appreciate any feedback on my ‘free’gear.

Hi James good ta see ya big guy. We have Marantz kit. Amp & CD player and we are very happy with it. They tend to be pretty solidly built with a warm sound not too dissimilar to Denon kit which is not very surprising as they are the same company by gad.
You should be more than happy with it if you are running it as an AV amp however be aware that AV amps tend on the whole to be not so accomplished as a stereo integrated at playing music through a two speaker rig.
However you choose to use the beast I am sure many hours of pleasure await you. Enjoy!
Hello Brer, good to see you’re here.
I can’t comment on Marantz gear, but I’d say good luck to you with that.
Wunnerful to see you two fine genilm’n again.
allow me a 😀
Nice kit, especially for gratis.
Anything which can play CD, SACD and DVD-Audio is a bit of a rarity.
The amp has Pure Direct and Video Off modes which are supposed to maximise stereo audio performance.
Both disc spinner and amp have 24/192 DACs built in which is a good sign.
Link both together with a digital coaxial cable for best results, although you will need analogue connections for SACD playback as the amp lacks a DSD decoder.
Oh, cheers FSteve, might need to pick your brains on coaxial as I moved on from phono to digital optical, and I don’t want to bother the guy anymore (more than happy to have water pistol fights with his daughters ‘tho).
Is coaxial like the old analogue Telly aerial connections? If so, I still have yards of that.
TV coax cable will work but you need RF RCA connectors for digital audio. Or buy this for 3 quid ready-made http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1-5m-Digital-Coaxial-Cable-Audio-Lead-Screened-Coax-gold-plated-1-5-Metres-/381112623681?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item58bc152241
Thankee!
Will you be playing any UFO through it?
Mos Def!
Making Contact is on right here, right now! 😀
Excellent to hear yer dulcet again. Never saw you as a face booker, unless you were Cecil Fisher-Smyth.
But can it play records?
Blast fear only two things- Mogwai and FaceBook
