Even more incomprehensible is someone recording, listening to or buying a record celebrating the man responsible for the murder of 504 innocent Vietnamese villagers
In fairness to Calley, he was only convicted for the per-meditated murder of 109 of those villagers which must have made drifting off to sleep a little easier
Despite having lots of libel lawyers as his neighbours in hell, I doubt he’ll be suing.
I am minded of the quote from the excellent Rumor of War by Philip Caputo:
“Before you leave here, Sir, you’re going to learn that one of the most brutal things in the world is your average nineteen-year-old American boy.”
How odd I didn’t know he had died. I watched a couple of docos on my lai only last week. I remember it happening. He was opening supermarkets when he returned home. The story of their platoon in the weeks leading up to it is also horrific.
The only person to have emerged from the incident with any credit was the young helicopter pilot – Harry Thompson IIRC – who threatened to shoot Calley and his fellow murderers if they didn’t stop.
