I was in a local Poundland today, rummaging through the end of season mulled-wine-scented candles, tinsel door decorations and so on when I found a stack of LP cover frames (black plastic frame with glass). Not a pound, not 50p, but just 25 of your puny human pence each. Fill your boots.

Je Vous Salue Poundland!
(We don’t ave ‘em in Europa)
Friend bought me one. Said it was pricey.
How many do you need – 3 tops ?
Ooh nice.
Got 6 album frames already on my wall, although does help its my office/music room so can get away with it. But if these are decent quality then grab them, cant have too many. I’ve have some in the loo if the Mrs would allow. Of course she is sensible and would tell me where to go but you have to have ambitions to work towards in this world.
How can they be good quality at 25p each ? Am sure they will do the job though, shame I didn’t pick some up a couple of weeks ago when I was over there.
They look fine, even if they might not bear close scrutiny. The frame is consistently matt, the corners meet neatly, all in all better than you expect for the original £1 asking price. The back is a bit of a bugger to put back on once you have a cover in there, but you won’t see that when they’re hung.
This is one of mine.
OK @Almost-Simon -which albums are earmarked for the frames in the bog?
In the court of the crimson king or something equally weird. I’ll refrain from any Millie Jackson.
I’ve got Delaney & Bonnie on tour with Clapton, Bluesbreakers with Clapton/Beano cover, Buddy Miles – Them Changes, Motörhead Ace of Spades, Funkadelic – Maggot Brain and Allmans live at the Fillmore East up on the wall in my room. Should change them every so often but gotten lazy and like these 6. A few in the loo’s would work well I reckon.
Reckon the Allams Eat A Peach would be better than Filmore.
Maybe less the back cover of the one with them skinny dipping in the river……
I need to change them now, been up too long and might be fading a little when the sun shines. Alas don’t have Eat a Peach, will have a look and see what deserves framing.
For starters:
King Crimson “Court Of The Crimson King” and “Lark’s Tongues In Aspic”.
Mothers Of Invention “Weasels Ripped My Flesh”, Manzanero/Eno “801 Live”, Eno “Another Green World”, Weather Report “Mysterious Traveller” and “Heavy Weather”. The Clash “London Calling”.
Have we had a thread on great/iconic album covers?
I think it’s at least been discussed in passing.
On the other hand, it would be a long while before I put the sleeves of Fairport Convention’s “Sense of Occasion” or Cattle Decapitation’s “Humanure” in a display frame on the wall…
The ones i have were £3 each and decent quality when i bought then so buying for 50p seems okay, i have similar, silver frames but they do the trick. LP frames need not be expensive to do the job.
I’ve seen some in my local hi-fi shop which you are hinged – you can pull the top of the frame forwards and remove the record to play it. I doubt they cost 25p, though.
A definite contender for one of the most depressing threads ever posted.
Buy art. Support artists. Not Poundland.
It’s not difficult to enjoy both – art and artefacts. I have a few pieces of art, including a painting of yours, which reward a prominent and stable position on my walls, but I like the idea of something less permanent and easily interchangeable elsewhere.
A choice that is entirely up to the individual. As a struggling artist competing everyday to produce artwork in the vague hope of selling the occasional piece and by doing so make enough money to continue working, keeping the lights on and having enough to eat the idea that I am competing with cheap mass produced frames manufactured to display cheaply printed bits of cardboard far from uplifting.
There’s a reason I used the word ‘artefact’ though. LP covers may be cheaply printed, but the ones we chose to display are packed with meaning.
Old tickets stubs, sporting memorabilia, or family photos come to that, many things that people chose to have on their walls, lack the universal value of art and are worthless to almost anyone but those who chose to display them.
Mine is a personal, professional view. I am well aware that it won’t be shared by anyone other than fellow artists. It’s akin to how musicians feel about Spotify and piracy.
My local Poundland did not have any. I already have a few. Currently showing are:
Bryter Later
Forever Changes (signed)
Stackridge (first)
Everybody’s Rocking (Neil Young)
Bedside Manners Are Extra
Dog On wheels (12″ Belle & Sebastian)
I also have a couple of set lists framed with appropriate photos: Leonard Cohen and Patti Smith.
I bought one of these frames online a while back – for a bit more than 25p – to house this album cover: https://www.discogs.com/Count-Basie-Orchestra-April-In-Paris/release/3922356
I’d bought it at a car boot sale for the Miles Davis record inside, but couldn’t bring myself to dispose of the sleeve. It’s just lovely.
