Oh yes! In a day when I did the family Christmas get together and then returned home to over 100 TV channels all crap, this was 75 minutes very well spent. Thank you VV for bringing it to our attention.
His interview with Billy Strings was brilliant. Like a lot of these seriously great players he’s incredibly humble and just worries about all the things he doesn’t know.
I saw a comment on one of his vids describing his rants about modern pop as “boomer shouting at clouds,” which is accurate and amused me. But he is a great musician and really knows his music theory. I’ve spent many hours going through his song-exploder-type “why is this song great” pieces.
I’ve said before how I don’t like his boomer rants – “there’s nothing new here” “it’s the same throughout” – missing that it’s not aimed at him, and to 16 year olds, it will be new.
Some of his music theory pieces I find too “exclusive” & over complicated – although it’s a way of plugging his books.
However, the dissection of songs, and his interviews, I enjoy a lot, His knowledge & enthusiasm shines through.
“I don’t like modern popular music as it doesn’t sound like the music I grew up with. Oh,, and I also don’t like modern popular music because it ‘does’ sound like the music I grew up with, so I’ve heard it all before.”
I like his style, and his love of music shines through. Maybe I’ve missed some of his rants, as I find that he’s generally enthusiastic about most of the music he covers, apart from some of the latest hits that are too bland and formulaic (and therefore probably deserve a kicking).
I think his ability to hear a tune and immediately pick out the chords and then play along is astonishing, and I’d love to be able to do that. Maybe it’s an easily learnable skill (via Rick’s books or not), and for all I know perhaps lots of people can do it, but I’ve never see anybody do it as easily as him.
For me, his best video is his long (almost 2 hours!) interview with Dave Gilmour. Not normally one of the most garrulous interviewees, DG soon opens up as it’s clear that Rick really, really knows about music production and guitars. Do they wander off into true music nerd territory? Most definitely. Is it still fascinating throughout? Absolutely.

A Christmas day treat, thank you.

This is the reason that Rick’s channel is one of the best on YouTube. His recent interviews with Ken Scott and Glyn Johns were just wonderful.

What is a boomer rant? Isn’t it just a rant?
Turns it into an ageist insult…
That’s my theory too.
“I don’t like modern popular music as it doesn’t sound like the music I grew up with. Oh,, and I also don’t like modern popular music because it ‘does’ sound like the music I grew up with, so I’ve heard it all before.”
Not sure whose quote that is, but any suggestion that he’s just a boomer ranting is just lazy ageist nonsense of course.
Here’s an example of a recent video of his to prove it.
Great appreciation of the Rosalia gem ‘Lux’ too!
