Hi all
There seems to be broad agreement about the 13th for a London pint, accepting there will never be a perfect date everyone can do. Our regular hang is unavailable so I suggest the Golden Lion in St. James’s Square – excellent pub, great beer and good location, a short walk from a number of tube stations and also from Waterloo / Charing Cross for those who prefer the outdoors to the tube.

We don’t have a room – we will just lurk in a group. I used to work near there and it tended to clear out when the post work drinkers depart. Good grub too.
See you there from 6ish?
Cheers
Twang

Hmmm, link didn’t post…my fault…

Great- see you there.
Thanks for organising.
I’ll be there at some point to keep you all company and thoroughly entertained with stories of how I fell asleep on the train and wound up in bloody Neasden
Excellent. I’m going to try and sort out getting down to London earlier for a bit of a record rummage and some mooching about. If anyone else is around in the afternoon and wants to join me, send me a message thingy…
I *might* have the whole afternoon off (evening is definitely OK) so I could well be around for some mooching. 🙂
I am off work that day so if you are record browsing @drakeygirl, gis a call, I SUPPOSE I could manage to do some of that but as you know I won’t enjoy it
I will be there. Looking fwd to it! 🙂
Sorry, but I’m off to the theatre, though thinking about it I can probably drop in for a quick one at 6:00 and then say my farewells.
I hope to be there.
I’ll go only if Bingo Little doesn’t .
Sorry, that sounds a bit d@wanky maybe the best thing would be to ignore and avoid the lad. That way everyone can have Great Time….
Much as I love being publicly ignored and avoided, unfortunately I can’t make this one, so I guess we’ll have to look for another opportunity to cast an awkward pall over an otherwise cheery social occasion.
Alternatively, if there’s something you’d like to work out in private and without involving everyone else, you can always PM me and I’m sure we can squash it, whatever it may be. Life is far too short.
Hope to see you next time Bingo. @giggles – uncool. Everyone is welcome, however bad vibes aren’t!
I’m in! I’ve got an early start the following day and I’m off the sauce in any case, so I’ll be driving in straight from work – anyone who fancies a lift back to the Windsor area or any point in between is very welcome.
And ta @dogfacedboy for the earlier lift offer but I’ll be under my own power after all 🙂
I’ve reconsidered and won’t be coming after all. Have a nice time, everyone.
That’s a shame. Perhaps another time?
Oh, shame! You sure?
Honestly, I felt pretty disheartened by the post above and didn’t want to be at a social gathering where anyone gets ignored or avoided. I know Bingo’s not coming anyway, which is a shame because I’d liked to have seen him, but that’s not the point. And I know that those posts don’t speak for anyone but their poster, but it was such a very unpleasant thing to say that I felt quite put off.
Yes, I can understand that. But a shame not to meet you and @bingo-little, finally, but maybe next time. 🙂
Absolutely. 🙂
That post is not at all good Bob, I was trying to convoke myself it was supposed to be funny, but that’s no reason not to come. I was looking forward to catching up.
CONVOKE…fucking autocorrect…CONVINCE!
You’re right, of course, @twang. I’m sure Giggles just posted drunk and probably regrets it now. I’ll be there.
Sorry for the overreaction: I’m a bit allergic to things getting personal.
I understand. I am more liable than most to overreact. Looking forward to catching up.
I hope so. 🙂
Just wanted to say thanks for the kind ones, that my non attendance is due to a prior engagement, rather than the post above and that I promise to try to make it next time and finally say hello in person.
I’d also like to add that, in fairness to Giggles, it may be that the above wasn’t meant to read as harshly as it did, or was an example of the Friday night phenomenon of saying something that would have better remained a thought. We’ve all been there.
Either way, it shouldn’t stop anyone attending the Mingle or a great time from being had, as surely it will.
Cheers
Ironically, the abusive, drunk(?) poster is the self-appointed Sheriff of the Afterword who’s been pompously berating HP on the Fabs thread.
@twang Really sorry – can’t make Fri now. Family stuff. Thanks for organising. Hope you all have a good one.
Next time dude.
how does a simple invite to have a pint go off the rails?
It’s the quaint British way of things JW. We love our traditions

I’ll be coming. Thank you Twangothan for the org skills.
I don’t think that fights are appropriate in that part of SW1 but I’ll bring my duelling pistols so if anyone’s honour is besmirched, they shall be able to settle it at dawn in Green Park like gentlemen.
Anyone who wonders or thinks the that there London mingles are cliquey no mates should worry not. I went to (the last?) one, knowing nobody and had a thoroughly refreshing, literally, evening, talking bollocks with the hitherto only names and avatars. Decent coves all. Recommended.
But I ain’t going.
I echo what Retro says above – have been to 4 or 5 London ones and a couple elsewhere and they are invariably a great night out with friends. Would like to have come to this one but the GLW has to go to Scotland and leaving the house in the control of our 16 year old daughter is not a good idea believe me.
Can’t make it, sadly – next time hopefully. Have a good one
I’m afraid I’m not available that evening, which is a shame as I love a good mingle and it’s always nice to meet some new peeps, even if I’ve not been in here for a while.
Here’s to the next time…….
I’m coming. Doing the usual first in first out routine, probably.
I haven’t been to the last few of these so looking forward to seeing some old and new.
Thanks for arranging.
I’m in Southwold that night! Sorry folks, just not around but will be thinking mingly thoughts from afar…
I might bring my little voice recorder and make a bollockscast is people feel like they’d like to say a few words?
IF people….
Please can we have an edit function….
I have to say at the last mingle I attended in Brisbane , it was very convivial. No cliques whatsover.
Absolutely, although I like to think we have a little cliquette going here.
Curious about what this was all about, so I did a bit of digging, and it seems that handbags were drawn on a Jeremy Corbyn thread.
FURY AS CORBYN DRIVES WEDGE BETWEEN POPULAR MUSIC FANS.
Got it. He’s the Corbynista who’s desperate to purge the Party of the soft lefties like yourself.
Right, that’s it. Definitely not going to the next Edinburgh mingle.
You and Lando would get on like a picket brazier on fire. Misty-eyed guff about the ‘glory’ days of the ’60s and ’70s.
I think you must be confusing me with someone else. I’m misty-eyed about the Incredible String Band, true.
@ianess You say ‘He,’ with such amusing certainty.
Pissed again?
I’ll be at me Mum’s place in New Zealand and it’ll be breakfast time so I’ll have a nice cup of tea and salute you all
*BUMP*
Just a little reminder about this little London mingle tomorrow night. Please come along if you fancy a pint or two and like a ramble on about music and other nonsense. Would love to meet new posters, regulars, lurkers, and any other category of Afterworders.
If you don’t know anyone, I can be recognised easily: I’m short and round (but don’t look like Shortround), and will be sporting a Word Bird badge. Hoping to get there by around 5.30pm after some crate-digging.
I will be taking along a vinyl copy of the Eels – Beautiful Freak re-release to give to the first person who wants it (I’ve bought myself…oops, sorry…I mean, I’ve bought Mr Drakeygirl the new Eels vinyl boxset for Christmas, and I will be doubling up on this album, so it needs to go to a good home).
If you’re umming and ahhing, come and um and ah with us. I can promise convivial frivolity.
I have already palmed my copy of Beautiful Freak off to @steven-c and my Peter Gabriel cast offs to @Doctor_J. If I find an amusing record whilst browsing with @drakeygirl then I’ll bring it along.
I shall be wearing a TARDIS top natch
Whilst not wishing to put anybody off attending, I’m hoping to get there around 7 (depending on the vagaries of Public Transport)
I will be watching 120 miles away and watching Kamasi Washington, but y’all have a nice time now, mmmkay?
Have fun guys – Im ‘on duty’ tomorrow as Mrs FF at ‘Book Club’ should be called ‘Wine Club’ methinks.
All clear this end. I should be there about 6.30ish. Many thanks for organising.
Feck. Feck. Feckerty. Feck.
I was planning on joining you all but for some unfathomable reason I thought it was happening NEXT blimmin’ month.
Botherations.
Sadly, owing to the vagaries of Mrs B not putting her (bloody) work events in the calendar, it transpires I’m not free.
Damn.
I had a close shave with “picking up from rugby” duty but cut the Gordean Knot by persuading him not to go to rugby.
Bollox, I’m in SW1 until 4pm, then running for my train. Have a good un people.
Hope to arrange TV curry mingle soon once I know my schedule
Sorry all. A drunken josh which I thought witty at the time was clearly nasty and not my intention. Apologies to @bingo-little and everyone else. Hope you have a great time.
No worries at all, dude – we’ve all been there, no biggie.
Have a great Mingle, everyone!
No probs Giggs. I was confused by it more than offended. xx
Right – we have nabbed a large table upstairs in something called the ‘theatre bar’! You can get to it through the pub or down the side of the pub.
Thanks Bingo. You’re a better man than I.
As I am in NZ and it’s morning, I will have to join you in spirit. Having said that, I could adopt the persona of the slightly weird middle aged bloke on his own who tries to join in the banter from his regular place at the bar. In my experience, the “regular” is never likeable and funny like Norm out of Cheers.
Keep the noise down, lads!
You should be a politician!
You got to watch her, mate!
Neil Diamond. That’s real music.
# Sweet Caroline-ah
Good times never felt so good – da nah nah #
Yes please – top up the old tankard
Oop. Pardonnez moi. Better out than in
A splendid evening and a delight to speak with old pals and meet some new.
Astonishingly, I wasn’t the first to leave.
Cheers then.
One day…
Tip top evening, and having been on the antibiotics I stayed on water and feel as fresh as a daisy this morning.
BC, there’s a job going as the pot man at our local if you need a little extra beer money
Doctor says I can’t take on physical work, but thanks for the offer. Yes, I will have another – thanks.
Bleary-eyed from beer, croaky-voiced from talking too much, and achy-cheeked a) at the top end from smiling and b) at the bottom end from sharing a chair.
It was an entertaining evening, with an impressive proportion of impressively proportioned Word Birds (three). Record shop swag was compared, nonsense discussed, and hugs or handshakes exchanged as required/preferred. I would like to point out that if there was a break-in at Christies (opposite the pub) at any point last night, it had nothing to do with me, and I was only theoretically working out how to rob the place. PS, I’ve got a couple of nice paintings to flog, if anyone wants to message me…
Those of who weren’t there want photos (assuming no-one in them objects).
Police will probably be releasing the CCTV pics fairly shortly. Or you can just wait for Crimewatch.
Thanks Nerds and Birds, lovely evening. Good to put more faces to screen names.
First time I’ve been described as ‘impressively proportioned’ , but I’ll take it. 🙂
Looking forward to the next one. 🙂
Despite being stone-cold sober and living in London for 25+ years, I got lost on the way there and lost on the way home, so a typical night out for me, really.
Easy to find – 5 or so minute walk from Piccadilly Circus Station.
Decided to be “clever” and tried a different route on the way home (how hard can it be to find Piccadilly Circus? It’s got these big bright lights on and everything.)
Didn’t get lost as such, more “went round the long way” – 5 minutes to get there, 20 minutes to get back. Surely some error there.
Cheers All – and here’s to the next one, and the rectification of the “Beer Owing” ledger.
Really hoping to get to one of these again soon. Shitty luck last night.
FWIW, Len and Joe of the old parish are coming up to That London on 4/12 for a pint if anyone fancies joining us. Not so much a mingle as we were doing it anyway, but would be lovely to have anyone else pop in 🙂
Hope to be able to join you…
Yay! That’d be ace. x
Bob, I’d love to catch up with you, Lord Leonard of Onan et al, if that’s allowed. It was lovely to see Carl, Ritchie, Twang, Phil, Beezer, Drakey, Vince and Hannah and newbie-Ruby and Rigid. (‘Why Tedious’ made a late appearance but I had to go by then). I’m always up for talking bollocks with my invisible friends.
Allowed! Allowed! It’s compulsory. Be there 🙂
Lovely to see you all on Friday night. Oddly enough, I bumped into Fraser yesterday who asked if we were still doing mingles.
Bring him along next time! What’s he doing now?
Isn’t he working for “Classic Rock” or some such mag these days?
Has he barred any good posters recently?
Tee hee …
Sorry to let everyone down on Friday by being there. As those few who saw me, it was a pathetic effort
It was great to see you if only for a quick handshake! I had a plan to talk upcoming Rutles business.
We’d all feel like that after working a double shift.
Think nothing of it.
A bientôt, mon ami.
Had you had any sleep though? You must have been knackered.
Good to see you though and see your record shop haul. You reminded me to listen to ‘Entroducing’ again
Yes I hope you slept the sleep of the gods!
