Normally I find the recent Mahavishnu’s a bit like listening to musicians tuning up (I know, I know I’m a philistine) but that was really great.
I wonder if the gloves thing is because of focal dystonia. Here is Scott from “Scott’s bass lessons” explaining why he wears a glove. I thought it quite interesting. He starts the discussion around 4.20
As an exercise in counting, YKYK has confounded musical nerds for many years. Here’s an example:
The looped pattern is 12 beats long (if we count the melody notes as quavers or 8th notes). The rhythm of the melody fits a 4/4 bar in a 3+3+2 hemiola, with the final note as a downbeat. But from that downbeat the drums count 3/8 and then what seems to be a standard 4/4 drum rhythm, before a 5/8 to lead into the repeat of the melody.
Alternatively, you could feel that intervening 4/4 drum rhythm throughout (3 bars worth), but you then need to offset the melody (which has its own internal accents) by an 8th note.
Don’t worry, I have a punk protest song/vid coming soon about NI politicians (I seem to do this every two winters) – fewer notes there, I believe (though it’s *slightly* proggy) 😀
I have been trying to think of something witty or profound to say about that clip for over a day now… but have failed miserably. I will therefore just say thanks to Colin for posting it. It was truly fabulous!
Look @colin-h, it’s been an awful year…
😀
Great version of one of my favourite Mahavishnu tracks. Although playing bass guitar in gloves is perhaps taking Covid restrictions too far.
I haven’t seen anyone play guitar wearing gloves since the Let’s Dance video. Perhaps it’s a tribute…

Gary Husband relegated to the loft there because Gary Wife has had enough of his keyboard stylings.
Ha! very good HP.

Clear as mud, then.
I’ve just had the very strange experience of feeling that a Mahavishnu track wasn’t long enough.
😀
Damn’ fine, Colin…my mood is elevated…
I enjoyed that, though I can’t help but feel it would be even better with fewer notes in it. Sorry, Colin.

Hurrah!

That’s the spirit! 🙂
