Can I make a recommendation for a local radio station show?
Sheffield Live is a local community station. On Saturdays 3-5PM they run a program called The Breakdown that is close to the spirit of John Peel or Mark and Lard when they used to do Weekdays 10-12PM shows on Radio 1. Always seem to be heading to the local dump or something when its on. Joel and Steve continue in the traditional “bumbling amateur fan” style and I have certainly caught up with some quality new music through them. All the shows – with play lists – archived on the link.
Anyone else got any hidden broadcasting gems like this?
This is a real gem, althhough I’ve absolutely no idea how I found out about it. Perhaps even on here.

Hugh, that takes you to a live feed of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. Whilst there are some great shows on there, such as local bands show Introducing (Saturdays, 8pm), there is some awful daytime drivel.

My folkie pal Sue Marchant used to have a show on there but she’s now on Cambridge 105, Felixstowe 107.5 and Ely Radio.
Biggles of these parts is far too polite to advertise his own shows, so I’m going to.
Songs from Under the Flooroboards is post-punk and much more:
Musica Mundi is world music:
Melbourne is a fairly flat place with some sizeable ranges not far away. This means that if you put a broadcasting transmitter up there you get fantastic reach to a large audience. Sydney, on the other hand, is very up and down. There was a community radio station up the hill in Paddington (where @Mousey hosts a program), I could just about have run an extension cord up to it but the reception was appalling.
This, in part, accounts for the success of independent community radio in Melbourne and the strong music culture down here and the virtuos circle created.
There are 2 excellent stations 3RRR which is the longest running. It has more talks, having an education licence and overall is more indy. Having said that there is plenty of other stuff – I did an African show on there for 8 years.

The other is 3PBS which is more roots. Reggae, blues, northern soul, bluegrass folk, etc.

for jazzers the Govt run ABC has a jazz only station called, prosaically -ABC Jazz

ABC Jazz is pretty good, discovered it when visiting Perth. It’s on TuneIn.
This thread may be more selective in its popularity, but these are all certainly links I will follow. Thanks to all.
