No, not some 14 quid ear buds to your phone via Bluething!
Big Stingray Phones jobs, plugged into the stereo! My exploration of the Porcupine Tree has led me to late night listening to long trippy tracks through my lovely AKG K702s. What a joy. I’ve gone mad listening to long forgotten treasures on, yes, “cans”. There’s no tool like an old tool. I just wish they had a curly lead like proper headphones but they’re hopelessly unreliable.

I am a big fan of over-the-ear cans. No leakage (mine are closed-backed to avoid disturbing Mrs F or bleeding into mics when recording), drivers big enough for proper bass, and ears that don’t get hot from being clamped flat for hours.
My trouble is, I don’t really ‘get’ music unless it is on big speakers at high volume. I could save myself thousands on soundproofing if only I could be happy with cans instead.
Similarly, I don’t really ‘get’ music unless I own the physical artifact and have the artwork in my hands, be it CD or LP. I don’t really ‘do’ streaming, even though I have the tech.
I am, as my 17-y-o offspring repeatedly reminds me, a dinosaur.
I’ve got closed backs for recording but the AKG are open backs and lovely for just listening.
A dinosaur with an excellent sound system.
And more records than I have space for.
This is what killed the dinosaurs. It wasn’t a meteorite, it was the floor of the room upstairs collapsing under the weight of sixty thousand twelve-inch singles.
That makes I proper larf.
Now to wipe tea off my keyboard.
I’m a big fan of headphone listening. Definitely over-ears for me. I don’t feel like I’ve heard music unless listening this way – almost interrogating the music.
Love my Bose over ear, noise cancelling headphones when travelling. Couple the cans with a Dragonfly Red DAC and the sound is impressive.
You know you’ve just reminded me I have a set of Pioneer noise cancelling phones they gave me when I left a long freelance gig. I’ve never used them!
You don’t get any more noise canceling than that!
You could always opt for these –

They even come in a stylish handbag (@moose-the-mooche), and at the low, low price of … wait … how much? Are they taking the piss?
