I’ve no real problem with Record Store Day – I can’t say I’ll be camping out overnight with the eBay scalpers for any of this year’s offerings but ultimately it’s a bit of harmless fun. Nevertheless let’s have a but of harmless fun at RSD’s expense as we once again play…Record Store Day Bingo. Eyes Down..see how many you can spot:
1. Re-issue of album that is coming out later this year but in a different colour
2. ‘Bonkers’, ‘nutty’ and ‘totally loony’ collectors picture disc of a tune you can pick up in a charity shop for 5p. “What will they think of next ” etc…
3. More scrapings from the bottomless pit of shite bootlegs from Ozit / Dandelion (See pic)
4. ‘Exclusive’ debut release by a band literally nobody has ever heard of
5. Multiple ‘exclusive’ releases on different labels by same (dead) artist
6. Mega limited edition of 500 copies of something that would be lucky to sell 5 any other week
7. Dr Who
8. er…Nine Live albums by the same artist
9. “Official” reissues that the band have no knowledge of
10. Another Various Artists Mod/R&B/Soul comp
11 .The Bevis Frond
I could go on..anyone wanna call a few more?

P.s. how could I forget ….another variant of Never Mind the Bollocks…Yep there’s another one this year…same album with some tracks missing. Coo.
this “new release” appears to be the Spunk bootleg (in re-configured form without “I Wanna Be Me”) which has seen the light of day before as a second disc with the 1996 CD issue of NMTB, and got it’s own release in 2006.
Unless of course they’ve uncovered a stash of new tapes
(unlikely).
Thing is, as a pedantic completist, I fully intend to buy it (if I can get my arse out of bed and into the Record Shop in time)
Wasn’t Spunk out on white vinyl for RSD two years ago? I seem to recall there was tons of it left all over (missis)
The Yanks are getting their own ragbag 7″ box set.
Spunk and NMTB PIcture Disc in 2015.
2014 was the a set of 7″ singles in a box which were Demo versions or alternative mixes of the tracks that eventually formed the album
Don’t recall anything from last year (but there must’ve been – you can’t have RSD without Bollocks)
What do we win for a full house?
Record from last year’s RSD that no one had the faintest interest in.
The obligatory chart act on vinyl, e.g. Gaga, Beiber. Snapped up by mad superfans so impossible to get. This year it’s the latest Little Mix album!
Textured cover, gold foil stamp, numbered and split colours
And 7″s and 12″s split between artists.
Or the 7″ split single featuring a cover by a major act on one side, and the original version of the other, in coloured vinyl of course.
I’ve never seen the madness of Record Store Day, due to living some distance from any participating store. However I have seen some of the purchases made by others, and mocked them.
I’m convinced that one such item, a repress of an old single on coloured vinyl, wasn’t even a legal issue, as the label copy was a direct reproduction of the original 1960’s pressing, right down to the legalese around the label perimeter – i.e. no IMPI LC code, copyright collection agency or other guff you expect to see on a record label today. It reminded me too much of those fake coloured vinyl LPs that were doing the rounds at the time, particularly as the record company owning the rights to the tracks no longer had the rights to use the imprint the single was originally issued under.
Some one sided releases, or double/triple albums with an odd number of sides of music.
Here’s some of the more interesting releases

I saw the list of this year’s offerings the other night.
Even allowing for the fact that I don’t buy vinyl I honestly don’t think there’s anything I’d cross the road to even look at.
Just another excuse to fleece those who’ve more money than sense.
I do know people who will buy this sort of tat though and proudly put up pictures of their “finds’ on Facebook to bore the rest of us and to those I say “I don’t care”
There are a few in the list that I’ll be interested in once the RSD hype is over and they’re available at reasonable prices.
Also one objet d’art release would appeal if I was more flush than I currently am:
An Alice Coltrane single-sided 10″ with a lotus flower pic on the back.
Interesting to see that the Smiths single is two demos that will feature on a deluxe version of ‘The Queen Is Dead’ . Hope this means the Mozbargo on unreleased material has been lifted
The Smiths pretty much released everything though didn’t they? Excepting demos and live shows I suppose.
Alternate versions, demos, BBC sessions and live gigs but yeah, apart from that….
There’s still a fair bit more to come out officially – this bootleg https://www.morrissey-solo.com/article.pl?sid=10/12/21/1757207 from 2010 contains a few examples
Wasn’t it allegedly leaked by Mike Joyce in frustration at Moz vetoing any deluxe or rarities albums being released as the drummer would get some of the money he is owed? The fact it’s from across their career is intriguing – and one of my favourite bootlegs
I never found out the story behind it – but that theory sounds plausible. As you say, the fact that it spans the band’s career would seem to point to an ‘inside job’. And now I need to go and listen to it again.
I can’t be bothered reading the list, but is there any sign of that old favourite, the random album track released as a 7″ single ?
I have my own Record Store Day once a month when I go to a bricks & mortar shop to buy whatever I missed the last time I was there.
This. There is a bit of a campaign by the Modern Vinyl people to encourage people to visit their local record shop on the day, but to buy stuff NOT on the RSD list. Plus, RSD have stopped one of my many vinly haunts, Norman Records in Leeds, from taking part this year because they are primarily an online shop. This despite them having an open door and ‘front end’ where you CAN just walk in and buy stuff, albeit without the traditional browsing experience. I shall be giving it a miss again this year, even if the Smiths and The The offerings are tempting.
I shall continue to frequent SOTUS and Piccadilly Records on an almost daily basis. Both emporiums have taken a hefty slice of the disposable stuff from me this week.
Yeah I read about the Norman’s thing. Leeds does have two high street Independent record shops that sell new stuff – I guess the bottom line is that Norman’s don’t face the eye-watering business rate rises and various other overheads that befall any small walk-in retailer as they’re tucked away on an anonymous business park – I wonder if it’s perhaps RSD organisers thought it unfair to Crash and Jumbo who are both Indie retailers in Leeds City Centre. Either way Norman’s have been quite accepting of the situation and they have some exclusive goodies of their own which will quite possibly be more interesting than this years RSD offerings.
On the other hand, RSD also allow second hand shops to participate. They have much greater margins on the 2nd hand stuff they knock out – so they’re not on the same level playing field as the ‘new stuff’ sellers either – I presume the fact there are quite a few more of these getting in on the second hand game means that Norman’s are out as they’re are too many shops vying for the same releases.
Not forgetting Wall of Sound second hand at the bottom of Crash.
Crash & Wall Of Sound – top shops I visited in Leeds couple of weeks back. Jumbos is OK but not great
Jumbo is fantastic. Leeds’ oldest rekkid shop. Used to be in the Merrion Centre and is about to move back there! Crash also great, if a little cramped…
But I don’t even own a record player!
Could be a good time to get into practice for Record Store eBay by bidding for one of the whopping seven copies currently on sale of that “David Bowie 1965 EP” released in 2013.
Presumably “very rare” and “impossible to find.”
The Thelonious Monk album looks interesting.
Springsteen’s Live in Hammersmith 75 on 4 LPs (first time on vinyl) and Bowie’s Cracked Actor triple live are probably getting me out of bed early. I do have other stuff that I have bought in previous years that I have never played though …
The Dr Who release this year is Dr Who & The Pescatons & Sound Effects double. Last year was Pescatons & Genesis Of The Daleks as separate releases. Year before was the vinyl debut of the two sixties Dalek movies soundtracks. And the Sound Effects album.
Year before that was the most obscure one – Sounds From The Inferno – two tracks featured as incidental music in An Unearthly Child & The War Machines. The first track was by John Smith & The Common Men with John Smith being the stage name of…. ( that’s enough – Nerd Police)
There are plenty more obscure Who related singles and songs by the cast. A nice compilation for RSD would be better than these different coloured rehashes
I’ve just noticed – Fawlty Towers Picture Disc
Interesting, but is it essential?
How many tracks constitutes an EP?
In my head it is at least (and usually) 4.
The T.Rex offering I’ve just stumbled across (Rock n Roll EP) only has 3 (and one of those is an instrumental version of Track 1).
Sort your naming conventions out RSD people.
I’ll be on the lookout for the double Live ’77 album, but I think I’ll pass on this one (unless it comes as a free gift)
