Absolutely no idea what’s going on, not a single scoobie. I’ve a sneaking feeling the next answer is Petula Clark’s Downtown? If not, Acker’s Stranger On The Shore? Howsabout The Laughing Policeman? Nellie The Elephant? Something Something Or Other by Dua Lipa?
No, I’ve got it – Nail On The Bannister by R S Tornaway!!
The concept of a “bootleg” (i.e. an illegal live recording) is an awkward one to apply when discussing the Grateful Dead. The band used to set aside sections of the audience area for “tapers” to set up microphones and record the concerts. Thus they permitted – indeed, encouraged – all live recordings of their shows PROVIDED that no one charged for the recordings. The cassettes of the shows were to be exchanged in the taper community, and never sold.
Indeed – I couldn’t find a timeline for them, almost as if they never really existed. Also, I think the turnover of drummers would make for a very long list.
Based on them starting in 1953 (and still going), it must be one of the oldest running groups – the only two that I can think of are The Searchers or The Four Tops.
(I’ve not googled their respective start dates, so not sure which one)
You’re just too good at this game. I was at a hotel in Bodrum, Turkey where Jacquie O’Sullivan was staying the summer she joined the band. Very glamorous, and clearly enjoying life. Way out of my league, as well as being considerably older than my teenage self…
Although I didn’t think they started as early as 1972, I’m going to go with XTC – guitar and bass player both as lead singers and an additional guitarist. Plus Dave Gregory leaving in 1998 just before the release of Apple Venus and the fact they used session drummers after Terry Chambers left

Rigid Digit says
And the constant of the rest of the band since Fugazì
Leffe Gin says
Yes, plus I remember them having a different drummer every time I saw them for a time in 83.

If someone posts one of those coloured time-line graphs for U2, I reckon I’ll get it right.
ZZ Top would probably be quite easy, too.
salwarpe says
Probably very obvious

Little Feat ?
Although they do have a new album in 2024 that is not indicated…..

Ah well, I guess somebody will edit Wikipedia sooner or later.

THE GRATEFUL GOD-DAMNED DEAD!!!

Funny you recognizing that…
I’m guessing if all the live albums and bootlegs were added, the whole table would be black.

Well, I can confidently say that it’s not Spinal Tap, anyway.

duco01 says
Oh yes – John “Stumpy” Pepys, Eric “Stumpy Joe” Childs, Peter “James” Bond, Mick Shrimpton, and Joe “Mama” Besser, to name just a few.

Sisters Of Mercy?
Anyway @chiz this is an excellent game, shame I’m shit at it. 👏
salwarpe says
Yes, the singer/drum programmer being the only constant fuctor.
So, not so shit.

Erm … it’s not a band like Bucks Fizz, is it?
salwarpe says
Extremely like Bucks Fizz. About as like Bucks Fizz as it is possible to get.
Gary says
I think we can rule out Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band then.

See that first album in 1982? That’s Ice Cream for Crow, that is.

A really tricky one, this

Shall we keep going? How long is this gonna fly?

I like this game!
1. Two people ever-present from the start in 1968, one playing keyboards, the other singing…
It’s got to be those wacky Sparks Brothers, hasn’t it?
2. That one further up the page, with the band that has been going since 1980 but has only made 3 albums, is really bugging me… I can’t get it…
salwarpe says
1. Either them or Pet Shop Boys, er… No, of course it’s Sparks – as I almost gave it away in my second sentence.
2. It was answered by MC Escher

Long may you run

salwarpe says
As there were four of them (until there weren’t), your second choice is first rate.
salwarpe says
Here’s another long running group – not quite so long though
duco01 says
It’s got to be those Robert de Niro’s Waiting hitmakers, Bananarama!

Another day, another band
Rigid Digit says
But for the absence of a drummer, could be Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Collect the money 👌

What’s the 4th line made up of? Gtr, BV and keys?
salwarpe says
Yes, that’s what it looks like to me.
