First of three programmes I highly recommend to anyone with even a passing interest in Neil, Viv, the Bonzos or that other band that began with a B (or was it an R?).

The R band the B band could have been.
Neil brought great joy.
I saw him many years ago do a marvellous gig at the Jazz Cafe – great songs interspersed with hilarious anecdotes about the Bonzos (especially Viv), the Pythons and the Fabs. On the evidence of the one episode (of three) broadcast so far, this series has much in common with that concert.
“Mangled stoat for breakfast.” (5) (Graham Chapman)
I saw him play solo concerts a few times at The Half Moon in Putney and also a couple of times as The Rutles. A great night on each occasion. An extremely talented musician, very very funny and a very charming nice person. I was very sad when I heard he’d died.
All sorts of people get called National Treasures. A lot of them definitely aren’t. He really was one.
Definitely will be listening to these.
A truly lovely man, and, of course very very talented. Such a sad loss at the end of last year.
I was at the very last Rutles gig at Colchester Arts Centre. It was the first time I had seen him/them and he was in such good form that I had high hopes of seeing again the next time round.
09/12/’20.
Neil’s birthday today.
