I doubt many people care but I do. I was at Elland Road when we got promoted from the 3rd Division – sorry, League One – by winning against Bristol Rovers in a thrilling game, having had a man sent off.
I was sitting in a chip shop lastnight looking at the West Brom result (they lost to Huddersfield which is nice little bonus). I looked at the table for literally 30 seconds because I couldn’t make the maths make sense in my head. Finally I celebrated with a hot chip.

Interesting little piece of history for those inclined to break out the D-word whenever Leeds are mentioned:

Congratulations, pleased for you all. My cousin’s other half is a Leeds fan, being a local and all. He seems to think that the world and their wife are against them, but I’m pretty sure that this is not the case. Why has he got a chip (possibly from the same chip shop as yourself) on his shoulder about this?
Slug says
No, he’s not being paranoid. On behalf of Mr and Mrs World, take it from me that the rest of us are really not very fond of Leeds United FC.
I could explain why, but football fans already understand, and non football fans will find it deeply boring.
I suspect Leeds fans secretly quite enjoy the fact their team is so reviled because it allows them an ‘us against the world’ attitude. My own team was also generally derided in the 1980s for our basic playing style and tiny, ramshackle stadium, but that just galvanized the players and led to an unbeatable team spirit, and we did pretty well for a long time. Sometimes derision can be used as a positive.
MC Escher says
Stay classy
Slug says
Don’t intend to deliberately spoil your chips at this joyous time. I’ll buy some bunting tomorrow.
MC Escher says
Fair do’s. Bit prickly this morning, have a mother of a hangover 😀
Freddy Steady says
Don’t be prickly @mc-escher
Bit of a media love in going on for your boys at the moment. Seems Leeds are everyone’s favourite second club all of a sudden! You certainly play decent football so will be interesting to see how you get on next season.,.good luck!
Colin H says
Has anyone told the Leedsboy?
Leedsboy says
He is very aware Colin. He says he has filled his time since Leeds last were in the prem by listening to two and a half Mahavishnu Orchestra Songs. It’s a shame it was done with two games left – I was rather digging the last one.
Colin H says
😀
Bamber says
…and West Ham will be there to play Leeds next season thanks to our victory against Watford. I know a lot of Leeds fans so I’ll be delighted for them until the first kick of next season.
Leedsboy says
Leeds did it through being the best footballing side in the Championship. A joy to watch. I hope Brentford go up – I like Pontus to have some fun as well.
MC Escher says
I’m in two minds. Would be happy for Pontus, but I also think there are too many London clubs in the Prem.
Slug says
Personally, I think that should be “not nearly enough”, but the current five teams for a city of almost nine million people seems not unreasonable.
Lemonhope says
As I said in the thread to celebrate the Liverpool win a few weeks ago, I am pleased to see Leeds back in the Premier League. I used to follow their results as a boy, for reasons I still can’t explain and having worked in Leeds for 6 months in 1999, with lovely workmates who couldn’t have been more welcoming, I feel a small affinity with the place. Congratulations .
Lodestone of Wrongness says
Wave to Norwich as they pass Leeds by….
dai says
Pleased too, my brother has lived there or nearby for 35 years, so I have visited many times and know the city pretty well. They were also one of the first two teams I ever saw play both on TV (FA Cup Final 1970 v Chelsea) and in person (FA Cup 5th round 1972 v Cardiff City).
Shame big Jack couldn’t have hung on for a few days to experience it.
Leedsboy says
It’s been a sad time at Leeds with Norman Hunter, Trevor Cherry and Big Jack all going in the past couple of months. 2,000 appearances between them.
MC Escher says
I like to think he (and Norm and Trevor) knew it would happen, given how good we’ve been since the resumption of matches.
Black Type says
Sadly, Jack had dementia, so probably wasn’t well enough to be aware of football-related events.
MC Escher says
I choose to believe otherwise 🙂
Chrisf says
Happy to see Leeds get promoted and they will be a welcome addition to the Premier League. As a Sheffield United supporter as a boy (don’t follow it that closely these days) it will be good to see the traditional rivalry restored.
It’s always worth remembering the road sign as you travel up the M1…..

In some ways a good season for my fancies.
The mighty Reds finally Champions again after 30 years.
Leeds promoted – probably Champions (where I studied- I used to go to Elland Road)
The mighty Swindon prompted as champions (my mates team – so we go when they are in Yorkshire)
I was always City rather than United, so that is quite pleasing (though getting to the point where I hope they can play each other and both lose)
Unfortunately Hull (home city, but wrong half) and Middlesbrough (I spent many long afternoons at Ayersome Park as a neutral) are trying to prove which is worst, and Bradford are failing to impress.
Carl says
I am pleased to see Leeds go up. My brother in law is a Leeds supporter, but that aside I had always regarded Leeds as a top division side and to my mind this is part of the natural order of things.
It’s not right seeing them in lower divisions.
dai says
If you check their history though they only really had a couple of fairly short eras when they were successful at the highest level.
Carl says
I know, but they were big in my formative years.
Dodger Lane says
Point of order.
Never out of the top 4 for 10 successive years from 64/65 through to 73/74 during which time twice champions, FA & League cup, 2 European wins and cheated out of the Cup Winners Cup and the European Cup. All of this done when there were many other strong sides.
Of course, it was all done through fouling, the dark arts and bribing refs.
SteveT says
Happy for Leeds given they were robbed by Villa last season when they had to give them a goal to level things out. Funnily enough Villa in same situation didnt do the sportsmankike thing. Still hoping they get relegated. Brentford in the Premier league would be a strange sight
count jim moriarty says
No stranger than having Bournemouth there for 5 seasons. Have to agree with you about the loathsome Villa though.
MC Escher says
And now champions thanks to Stoke beating Brentford.
What a great story in this shit year.
Twang says
Not of any interest to me but I did think “Leedsboy will be happy” this morning.
Leedsboy says
He was and still is Twang.
count jim moriarty says
Only good thing about it is looking forward to the enjoyment next season when they come straight back down.

1964…
Top flight champions: Liverpool; second tier champions: Leeds; third tier champions: Coventry City.
We all went on to enjoy a fair bit of success in the ensuing seasons. Let’s hope for more of the same this time round too.
paulwright says
OMG, you mean they’ve repeated the season and we didnt notice? Oh, no.
Lemonhope says
1964 – I was born. I’m not doing that again, I still haven’t recovered.
John Walters says
As a Manchester United supporter I’m saying nowt !
Dodger Lane says
Oh go on, you know you want to.
Mrbellows says
My oldest brother has been a Leeds fan all his life so he’s a happy camper right now. Slightly off topic, I tried to watch a ‘Roma’ match a few weeks ago but without a crowd it felt more like watching a practice. I lasted 20 minutes. How is it going for you watching football without the fans present?
SteveT says
We have Roma on waste ground in and around Birmingham – I didn’t realise they could play football
tinysuns says
I care too, massive Leeds fan and I’m thrilled to bits. Give Marcelo a 10 year contract!
geedubyapee says
55 years a supporter, so pretty pleased today. Promotion, then champions without playing a game feels good.
Dodger Lane says
Celebrated 50 years as a fan this year, and delighted. I am more pleased for Bielsa than anything else, thought he was looking under pressure the past few weeks. It’s clear he wanted this as much as the Leeds fans. The players seem a decent bunch, and one can argue that they were not the strongest squad but Bielsa has made them so much better and they have got there by playing football the right way. Have no idea how they will do next season, but the way they played against Arsenal in the cup suggests they may be o.k. Whatever happens, it’s been a great weekend and a brilliant couple of years with this wonderful man managing the club.

. . . and no you’re not having Ben White !!
MC Escher says
I hear you. Hope you’re wrong though.
Leedsboy says
Let’s see what Ben thinks of that shall we?
Billybob Dylan says
… and Brentford are in with a shout of automatic promotion! Brentford! In the Premier League? Can’t be. But they’ve always been a 4th division team.
I looked it up over the weekend. The first professional game I ever saw was on a Monday night, March 29th, 1971, Brentford v. Colchester United, about 6 weeks after Colchester put Leeds Utd. out of the FA Cup.
Native says
Seems a large number of fans are upset that they had an open top bus celebration last night – despite telling supporters to stay away from Elland Road all week. Was apparently a decision to appease Amazon’s filming, and I suppose that means welcome to the corporate Premiership.
MC Escher says
Yes, it looks like a bit of an open goal (SWIDT) in PR terms. Telling people to stay away and then laying on an open top bus. I believe the bus didn’t go anywhere but nevertheless it sent out a mixed message.
aardvarknever says
On a different note I was touched when I spotted an LUFC flag raised on a front garden flag pole in Little-Islington-On-The-Downs (approx 260 miles from Elland Road).

Spare a thought for the F.A. Cup … Arsenal v. Chelsea … the final no one has ever wanted.

As a happy West Brom season ticket holder well done to Leeds. We went down in 1985 it took us til 2002 to get back so I understand the jubilation.
Yesterday we enjoyed our 5th promotion to the Premier (a record) so apart from the Pulis years we do not endure boring seasons.
In Bilic we trust.
