As an article on the Guardian site today points out there seems to be a lack of satirical comedy aimed at ISIS. A shame when it so richly deserves to have the piss taken out of it.
Just look at what happened in Paris this January with Charlie Hebdo, a magazine which didn’t just satirise one religion but all. Private Eye, to their great credit, visibly supported them with cartoons of their own afterwards. This was in great and shaming contrast with someone called Francine Stock who felt that Charlie Hebdo was not deserving of a PEN feeling that they were not purveyors of the type of exalted journalism she felt would have been more deserving. Rather missed the point.
In the past, there was always a dark humour, laughing in the face of adversity, that helped keep everyone’s spirits up. By ridiculing the evil, you made it less frightening.
Certainly it was there during WW2, throughout the IRA campaigns, and right up to the Falklands War.
I think the turning point was the first Gulf War, when loads of songs were blacklisted as being “too sensitive for broadcast”
It’s not really laughing *at* ISIS, but I enjoyed this, from The Onion…
“Following last week’s deadly Paris attacks and numerous other violent incidents perpetrated by the terror group ISIS, many governments and populations worldwide are wondering how we can eliminate this threat. Here are some strategies to defeat the Islamic State:
Publish a long-form article detailing the challenges involved in fighting an enemy that does not value human life
Refuse to appear terrorized by this constant, worldwide threat of violence and death
Organize a coup, leaving the U.S. free to prop up the ISIS leader of their choice
Spend $1.7 trillion
Attempt to compromise with our adversary by meeting them halfway on their demand to spill the blood of all apostates
Stop flow of new ISIS recruits from West by encouraging disaffected youth to join violent extremist groups back home
Maybe draw them out to sea?
Simply coordinate with our allies on a comprehensive strategy that targets ISIS militants while limiting civilian casualties, while simultaneously addressing the longstanding socioeconomic struggles that drive young Arab men to embrace radicalism, reaching out to liberal and moderate factions within Syria, and addressing our own prejudices that galvanize support for terror around the Islamic world
Train and arm somebody else’s kids to go over there and shoot them.”
Couldn’t agree more. They’re an absurd organisation who deserve to be mocked.
Unfortunately, Nick Cohen is spot on in his observation that very few have had the balls to satirise radical Islam since the death of Theo Van Gogh.
Well yes, absolutely so.

Don’t make me post the Jon Oliver clip a third time!
I love the Falsetto sock puppet theatre for their Dr Who nerd comedy
A similar thought occurred to me during the week.

Great idea for a post. If we lose the ability to laugh, they have won a major victory over us.
Having said that, I can’t immediately think of anything appropriate to post.
“scratches head and goes off for a think”
Well I woke up this morning
Turned on the TV news
Islam killed another bunch of people overnight
No wonder we got the blues
(repeat every morning from now on)
Not quite ISIS, but if you havent seen Four Lions you should. Chris Morris doing for terrorism what Dad’s Army did for the Home Guard
Agreed Paul, I can’t recommend it highly enough. Here’s a trailer –
“Rubber dinghy rapids!”
innit.

“Maybe draw them out to sea?” – ha!
It’s taken them six seasons and a spin-off show to have that idea in The Walking Dead.
For the benefit of any new readers who aren’t in on the joke, Niscum and H.P. are actually one and the same person.
Oops -wrong thread !
Still a good joke about fundamentalist fascists. Made me laugh anyway.
