A friend shared a video of Larkin Poe doing a very good cover version of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ on Eclipse Day. Then he shared this, their version of Son House’s ‘Preachin’ Blues.’ I think it’s fab. I hope you do, too.

Larkin Poe made a lovely EP (“Killing Time”) with the hugely talented Blair Dunlop a few years ago. It’s on Spotify and you can buy it for a couple of quid on Amazon marketplace.
It includes a nice version of Dylan’s “I’ll Keep It With Mine” which his dad’s band covered in 1969.

I saw Larkin Poe supporting (and accompanying) Elvis Costello a few years ago in Uppsala.
I like the video of their cover of Preachin’ Blues posted above – I like it quite a bit more than the material the duo did when I saw them live
There’s the rub. Their stripped down covers are way better than their own stuff.
Saw them in their own right at the Musician in Leicester as a 4 piece band – they were fantastic and did a brilliant version of Wade in the Water. Bought their collection of ep’s at the time and the album they did with Blair Dunlop – both very good.
Then they buddied up with Costello as his opening act and occasional backing vocalists and released the album Kin. Its not very good and they were underwhelming as an opening act for Costello.
See them in a sweaty club – they are in their element in that type of venue. Very good musicians but not particularly great songwriters.
