A blogger of my acquaintance who calls himself Steeforth and writes the Age of Uncertainty blog, has been doing this sort of thing for quite a while. http://ageofuncertainty.blogspot.com.au/2008/12/ladybird-book-of-recession.html
Apparently he was doing something of the sort for Ladybird when they were cooking up this can’t-beat-’em-join-’em gambit, it was accepted but then they knocked him back, saying the format wasn’t quite right, whatever that means. He reckons some of his ideas have turned up in the stuff shown in the news stories, which ain’t right if so.
I’ve seen a few of the “unauthorised” ones over the years
I think thye may have been inspired by Miriam Elia’s recent spoof, though they weren’t pleased with her at the time.

Good tip Mike. Steerforth is rather fine. Now following him on Twitter.
Gentleman bookseller of Lewes, eh. Just down the road from Arlington.
Absolutely superb thread. Quality.
Look, just stop this. You’ve all had your fun, but this is starting to mess with my perfect rosy cheeked childhood memories.

Conchy and Saucey have just been discussing Mr Pastry.
He really does belong to the age of innocence of the original Ladybird books.
Bravo! Great stuff!
The wonderful http://scarfolk.blogspot.co.uk/ has included a few books down the years:
