Let’s really test this new site with a thread chock full of video clips. I wonder how many posts it takes to blow its mind (if sites have minds).
My favourite musical genre is soul & I love the female voice. So, how about posting your favourite performances of Ladies singing Soul? I’ll start with The Queen, Aretha Franklin, and I Say A Little Prayer.
If you have difficulty embedding videos, just make a suggestion and I’ll find it & post it.
I’m guessing this site is robust enough to take a thread with 75 video clips.

I knew I could rely on you, Moose. Lovely obscurity from the US answer to Dusty Springfield. Or, maybe, Dusty is the UK Chris Clark?
Love Chris Clark, this is my favourite

Excellent call, Moose.
Mummy, this lady’s voice makes my special area feel all funny.
Candi Stanton-Young Hearts Run Free(1976): http://youtu.be/BXsosNMI0j4
I don’t know what happened there, Pencil. Your URL looked fine to me.

Ok. Let’s try that again…
Perfect!
I’ve got Alexis Korner to thank for this.
I accept there is a lot of crossover between Country and Soul (see Shelby Lynne below) but that’s pushing it a bit, Moose. The key for me is the well of emotion underpinning the vocal delivery.
Erma Franklin – Piece of My Heart
Stuff I didn’t know, but probaly should’ve done:
Erma was Aretha’s sister (the name is the obvious clue, but it passed me by completely)
She backed Aretha many times throughout her life, including the imaginative backing vocal arrangement on Respect.
Gotta Find Me A Lover
This is worth it for the awesome intro alone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nv-16IxdrZo
That is a corker, MtM!! I’m sorry I was churlish over Loretta Lynn earlier.
Funnily enough in the sleevenotes to Timi Yuro’s the Lost Voice of Soul by (I think) Roger Dopson, he argues that Patsy Cline was a great soul singer. The common root of country and soul is Gospel – I think old Elvis was on to something when he said he thought of all music as essentially gospel.
And anyway – Alexis Korner is always right. I don’t make the rules.
I’d agree about Patsy. Her pacing and delivery ache with bitter experience. It’s just I don’t hear much soul in Loretta. I do hear a great rock voice, though. My favourite album of hers is the one produced by Jack White.

Bettye Swann
Maybe it’s meant to be one singer, one song. But if you’re going to mention Bettye Swann, I don’t think Tell It Like It Is can be overlooked. So that’s two for Bettye.

I posted this here recently but any excuse – my comment favourite song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUHBjVMsNmw
I loooove Gladys Knight (and the Pips too).
If I can successfully post a video is another story…let’s try:
If it worked it’s “Just Walk In My Shoes”.
If not – work your magic please, Tigger!
Fabulous, Locust! That makes me think of Midnight Train To Georgia, then this:
http://youtu.be/jygwgwAcavo
Shelby Lynne – Rainy Night In Georgia
From ‘The Beat’ – discussed on here on the auld board……
Mitty Collier – I Had A Talk With My Man.
OOOh, like that – never heard of it or her
Never heard it, but I have it on Best of Chess!
Her compilation on Ace is consistently superb.
“can i do you now, sir?”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh-2_kdVcyA
Lots of great Bettys (and Bettyes) in this soul-singing mularkey.
Here’s Betty Everett.
As heard on the awesome NME Pocket Jukebox
http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/r4music/all
Well obviously I didn’t f888ing mean that, i meant this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQePR52VtHY
Bettye LaVette is one of those artists who is flourishing in later life. Here’s the best song from 2005, her version of Joy.
Her latest album, Worthy, is pretty fantastic too.

Turn off the lights? What on earth for?…….oh I see….

The silky mid seventies voice of Jean Carne with some superb Philly soul

Tim, I have to applaud your contributions to the thread. All of them are top notch. Thank you.
Magic soul time:
Marcia Hunt -Walk On Guilded Splinters
Oof! Perhaps, she Marsha hates her name being mis-spelt!
Sod it
http://youtu.be/WB9TB-yvfkA
Obviously you’ve omitted Etta James purely by mistake. A Brain Fade, as it were. Don’t worry I’m going to put it right for us all.

Let’s get funky with Laura Lee:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dNjQ2d7iFHk
http://youtu.be/XZIzF2uC9MM
She may be small but she has a heck of a pair of lungs!
hur hur hur
Linda Jones – Hypnotized
I wouldn’t say that’s the best song on the thread but what a frontage in that picture! Double front beams! Hmmm…
Agree on both points!
“both points” hur hur hur
The real Queen Of Soul
I have created a Spotify playlist of all the tracks posted so far that I could find. Feel free to add any more you come across
spotify:user:bungalowjoe:playlist:2XwNHbh3NlVm7pS4F08Qhq
Love this thread
Thanks for doing that Joe
Doris Troy – I’ll Do Anything
http://youtu.be/P8BPSjfwiFc
Indeed.
Nuff said…
Ladies Of Soul – Soul Medley @EversStaatOp538: http://youtu.be/_xvBut6_3SU
Janelle Monáe – Give Em What They Love
http://youtu.be/21X7ALvwN8Y
Great to have you back on top form, Tigger. And nice work, Joe with that list.
Time for me to rock the boat a little. Here’s a lady from Cuba with a lot of soul.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KADylpog8Ls
Why, thank you, KFD.
Cuban Soul could have a thread of its own. This is my favourite Cuban lady singer.
Machito y Graciela – Ay José!
http://youtu.be/Vez8F_rzlok
Sadly Celina died this month:
http://www.theguardian.com/music/2015/feb/17/celina-gonzalez
Shelby’s got soul by the bucket load. Everything about this is just fabulous
Shelby Lynne – Leavin’
Being re-released with 5 extra tracks, that LP is!!
I like my soul rather silky and sophisticated. Time for Ms Baker.
Or why not Erykah Badu?
Erykah gets better with age.
Window Seat. Beware: video is for adults only!
Posting like crazy as my son has actually let me use the computer for a few minutes. He’s a little tyrant.
Another old favourite.

Sorry! That was Jocelyn Brown with Somebody Else’s Guy.
Millie Jackson
Melissa James
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-WTvapo0NGQ
Carleen Anderson
Lizz Wright
I have to admit that (to my shame) I’d never heard of Lizz Wright, but that was just beautiful. I suspect Percy would approve thoroughly.
Thanks for that, Retropath. I’d forgotten all about Lizz Wright. I have her album “Salt” but haven’t listened to it for ages now. Obviously I have some catching up to do.
Natalie Duncan
(Can you tell I like covers too?)
I thought the Hootenanny was very good this year. All the veterans could still sing and the youngsters largely bought their A game. This was my highlight. I love the way Ruby takes this up a notch with each verse or chorus. Full money’s worth. while I’m on; happeeeeeee noooo yeaaarrrrrr!!!! Hootenanny!!!!!
Ruby Turner – Peace in the Valley
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4czTIjYwGlc
Merry Clayton (well, it had to be her after you remembered her her version)
That’s enough for now
Fantastic group of contributions, retro. You know my love for Merry knows no bounds but my favourite is Ruby Turner’s performance. Wow!
It’s Vince Black what posted the divine Miss T, but she is truly wonderful. When she is in full belt on the tiny stage of the Jam House in Brum the world slows down. Always the reason for ever wondering if Jools Holland live is less excruciating than the on telly (he is), she makes the high point of all his shows, and he is wise enough to recognise that in his billing.
Apologies.
Here’s a nice cover you might like:
Corinne Bailey Rae – Little Wing
A Cuban Soul thread, Señor Tigger? That sounds caliente. Alias and Ivylander would be here like a shot.
I’m interested as to how far we can stray into other genres and stay within the OP for the thread.
We had a wonderful thread a while back on Ladies of Reggae. I think several of them might fit in comfortably here. Like Dawn Penn.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=weFxKPsYTf4
http://youtu.be/weFxKPsYTf4
I think that thread led to about 80 video postings. This one is still going strong and we are well over fifty. I find I have to press play twice to get the song started. Perhaps, that makes it easier to post a larger quantity?
The two most obvious omissions so far:
Tina Turner:
Mavis Staples
Well played, Alias. Two vids embedded in a single post!
Just realised that if I post a Tube link from the iPad it will not get converted. The song was You don’t love me (No no no).
I’m on an iPad, KFD. Don’t post the header as a link. Below the video is a grey bar. To the left is the view count. To the right is a flag. Just inside that flag is a figure of maths meaning less than: ‘<'. Put your finger on that and it brings up an URL to share. You'll find that 'tube' is 'tu.be' with a full stop in the middle. Copy that and paste it into your post.
No Patti Labelle? She sings wonderfully on Poet 2 with Bobby Womack and goes places few can take us. Can anyone oblige?
Let’s see if I can multi-embed
Patti Labelle – If Only You Knew
Laura Nyro & Labelle – Gonna Take A Miracle
http://youtu.be/SvPZo52X5vo
Chaka Khan – Ain’t Nobody
Thanks, Tigger. I love the way her voice soars away, and just keeps going….
Ok let’s give it a try. I felt like posting Adele’s Rolling I the Deep but I predicted a riot.
So here’s Aretha doing it. No one’s going to take issue with the Queen of Soul.
Nothing wrong with Adele! Especially, Rolling In The Deep.
Sorry Tigger, but it only sounds halfway to being a song when Aretha takes hold of it and gives it a good shake.
Fair enough.
Great performance here by Lamya.
By that album I thought Soul II Soul had lost its lustre. But, that track is great.
I agree. This is when the bubble popped SIIS were such big news in 1989-90. It’s not a bad album as a whole though.
A thread of soul ladies without Tammi Terrell? Consider that gap filled.
P P Arnold
First Cut Is The Deepest
Angel Of The Morning (B-Side to above single)
Several years later, she lifted a so-so Ocean Colour Scent track (“Its A Beuatiful Thing”) into something more than it would ordinarily have been
I can’t embed at the mo but if you get a chance, listen to Lizz Wright’s version of ‘Stop’ by Madonna- so good that you forget the pretty pedestrian original.
Thank you- lovely.
Wot, no Fontella Bass?
And this too.
Dionne Warwick may be self absorbed on The Apprentice (US version) but, by God, she could sing. Compare her version of Say A Little Prayer to Aretha’s.
Seconded! Dionne did not become Bacharach’s favourite for nothing. Se knows to deliver a song.
She did indeed. But her finest moment, possibly the finest moment in popular music is this…
http://youtu.be/ijhL9Y7skQs
Not my speciality area, but I do love this.
Excellent!
Puts me in mind of The Shangri Las – Remember (Walking In The Sand).
No Doris. There is now.
http://youtu.be/nbh-Lun6t-8
Ooo mama…
Nice to see a young lady reposed in prayer. How’s the painting?
I’m going to push the envelope a little again with the wonderful Virginia Rodrigues from Brazil. Not just because she is singing in Portuguese but because her music hovers somewhere between the sacred and the profane. I suspect that many of the singers we’ve mentioned have sung (or perhaps still sing) in church.
Pleasure digging them out – this thread is full of gems
Just watched this weeks Reg D Hunter’s all about me documentary, which has snippets of musical interest interspersed between his driving places. Nice footage of Sharon Jones singing in a church
I love a bit of Sharon Jones, @retropath2. This is a great ‘retro’ video, and a cracking song (recorded in 2007, despite the visuals…) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ouI5KcyHfE
Try again: http://youtu.be/8ouI5KcyHfE
I enjoyed that Reginald D Hunter programme and good to see Sharon Jones. Let’s see if this link works for me?
Christine Perfect sings I’d Rather Go Blind with Chicken Shack
She later married a Mr McVie.
We mustn’t forget Barbara Lynn.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yjig8Hp6CA
Great song choice, ivy, but I’m really loving the new avatar. Groovy!
Merci, Tigs. I felt it was time to bare my soul….
Cool. This page loads super fast for me in spite of being chock-full of videos. Hope it’s ok for everyone else.
No worries, if MY old slow computer is having absolutely no problems then it should be fine for everybody!
Hooray! It was always frustrating on the old Afterword thatI’d hve to abandon great threads when the video count got too high. (But the no-video rule was also frustrating)
Ha! The only frustration here is the lack of editing possibilities… 😉
Absolutely! Working like a dream, number 2.
Until yesterday I had no idea that Nina Simone had a singing daughter. Here she is singing a song about her mother.
She’s new to me. Lovely voice.
Quite rightly. the OP is Ladies of Soul. Soul is women’s music. Primal and raw. A young girl hasn’t experienced enough to sing it. (A point which I’d be happy to be proved wrong on!)
Here is Oumou Sangare. a Queen of Malian Soul. Nothing flimsy and superficial about her voice.
Making a very unexpected appearance on this thread: Pink Floyd!
Not completely sure about this one. Soul singing?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAydj4OJnwQ
Interesting question. I’d definitely say it’s soulful but what is Clare Torry trying to express? I’m sure, you hear a song about dying, KFD, but I suspect the Mooche hears something different. It took until 2005 for her to get a songwriting credit for her remarkable improvised contribution.
The band were impressed with her version of Light My Fire. I can’t find that on the interweb but, to prove she can sing words, here’s One Way Street.
Hoi!
How come I get all the blame for all the perviness in the world?
I’d write more, but it’s very difficult typing with this rubber glove on.
How’s about this, then?
Which jazz singers have got soul?
I think I’d probably argue that several fine jazzers can deliver when a fine soul song when they put all that sophistication and technical innovation to one side.
Cassandra Wilson, for example, has a lot of soul in her music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI4_bszBJAw
“Hangs head in shame” I’m afraid to confess that I’m with Moose on that one, Tigger.
I wouldn’t want t limit it to one interpretation but it is pretty orgasmic.
There you go again! Putting words in my fist, I mean in my mouth.
I’ve always thought Ms Torry was merely reacting to her experience of the costumer services hotline of BT Broadband. We’re talking deep, dark cosmic despair.
Costumer services???
SED-A-GIVE???
Cosmic!
Woke up with Macy in my bed, sorry, head
Sorry, I didn’t quite catch that. Where was the ‘ck’ in ‘fucking’?
(I checked the posting guidelines & I don’t think I broke them.)
Soz, I forgot your reflex response to a potty mouth.
Mrs Tiggs has put me right, but I confess I was unfamiliar with many of the phrases she taught me. Exhaustingly educational.
Public school?
My better half has been schooling you in profanity!!? You couldn’t have a better teacher. She is something of an expert. I hope she charged you top price.
@retropath2. Bang Bang from Macy’s most recent album is quite a stonker. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pl9jkDpcnKs
You seem to be having trouble posting videos, Drakey. Don’t post the header as a link. Below the video is a grey bar. To the left is the likes count. To the right is a flag. Just inside that flag is a figure of maths meaning less than: ‘<'. Put your finger on that and it brings up an URL to share. You'll find that 'tube' is 'tu.be' with a full stop in the middle. Copy that and paste it into your post.
Hmm. Was posting them OK the other day…
Have this, then: http://youtu.be/b5eWL_-eY8Y
Oops!
http://youtu.be/b5eWL_-eY8Y
Youtube links need to on their own line – carriage return after text then paste yr clip. I’ll add to the FAQ.
That explains it! Thanks #2.
Time to get up
Laura Lee – Dirty Man http://youtu.be/xnh5zjPfkM8
Nice try, Contrary. Interesting selection.
You rang?
Lovely lovely Linda
I have only one thing to say about Linda Ronstadt. And it’s this:
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh….
This clip is honestly only about the vocal, nothing else
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRqHWDys5qE
I refer the right honourable gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago.
The Spotify playlist has now been updated to include all the songs I could find that have so far been posted.
Great work, joe. But, I’m not finished yet. How about some 21st Century Soul?
Sandra St. Victor – Coming Round
Jessy Lanza – Kathy Lee
http://youtu.be/LbIhScab72E
Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators – Feeling Free
Giovanca – How Does It Feel?
What a wonderful thread – hope it runs and runs.
Couple from me for now – hard to believe but both came out as UK sevens.
Debbie Taylor – I don’t wanna leave you
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cGIygLsHKJY
Barbara Hall – Drop my heart off at the door
Sadly despite Junior’s best advice not sure I’ve got the hang of this video lark – so if you’re passing Tigger please link for me. Ta.
Ah, that’s how you do it…
Good to see you on a Soul thread, Morrison. Now you’ve got the hang of it, keep the selections coming. You always mine gold from those deep Soul seams.
For the hundredth video, Aaliyah – Try Again
Well. I think this thread proves the site is very robust with regard to embedding videos!!
Back to the early days for the superb Ruth Brown:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhW8QqXX_ck
Is there a voice around today more soulful than Rhiannon Giddens?
Black Is The Color
I’ve just checked & we have criminally overlooked Roberta Flack. The earlier version of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face is best. Such poise and perfection in the phrasing.
The criminally underrated Marlena Shaw:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srgHFFYYeWs
Listening to Chaka on Joe’s playlist reminded me of Mother’s Finest.
Not adding anything groundshaking, just an alternate version of Aretha doing Say A Little Prayer, but this is a gorgeous lovely very controlled performance, there’s a little vocal trill, like Aretha sings a flute somewhere in it. Listen out…
I’ve never seen that before. Exceptional! Her performance is special, obviously, but aren’t the backing vocals amazing! I bet Erma is in the mix somewhere, unseen.
Bettye Crutcher
Not the most prepossessing of names perhaps but an a voice of warm sensuality.
“Passion”
http://youtu.be/ZBnAOWESaVU
A voice that’s new to me. I’ll do a bit of exploring. Could the cover be any more seventies. I can see where 10cc got the idea for How Are You?
Randy Crawford – Street Life
Linda Womack!
Keeping it mellow:
Betty Everett – of “You’re no good” fame – with mid-70s slow burner
Nice to see you here , Morrison. Tiggerlion clearly has great faith in your knowledge of soul.
Quite right. Morrison knows his soul, especially the more up-to-date kind, but all the experts are present and correct on the thread, starting from Mooche at the top and including you, KFD!
Possibly on the gospel side but Naomi Shelton turned out a cracking record last year with Cold World on the brilliant Daptone label. Sharon Jones mentioned above is a label mate.
This is one of the best:
Excellent, Charlie. Daptone keeps the flame alive, does it not?
Yes Charles Bradley is fantastic too..maybe one for the sister thread on Soul Men.
Some sweet soul music.
The Supremes – Can We Love Again
Thanks for reviving the thread, bj.
Alicia Keys – If I Ain’t Got You
Tata Vega – Get It Up For Love
http://youtu.be/wGbmK9QM0XE
Thanks, bungalow. That song is new to me. Nice shiny eighties production. Ta’Ta seems a very lovely lady, patiently encouraging her obviously struggling partner to get an erection.
“Hey, big man! Get it up for love!” Indeed.
Gladys Knight & The Pips – The Only Time You Love Me Is When You’re Losing Me
The Supremes – Bad Weather ( produced by Stevie Wonder! )
Glad to see the ladies are still boogieing on.
Here’s some smooth soul from Minnie Riperton.
I always think of Brandy as being overproduced. Her vocal is often drowned out by multi-tracks of her own voice! Chris Brown stripped it down to reveal a breathy, sweet whisper. Put It Down.
Cassie is a pretty little creature. She’s on Atlantic Records, so must be soul. Right?
http://youtu.be/sSOtIHUJbjk
Me & U
JoJo might not have Cassie’s pedigree but she matches her for the voice. See what you think.
http://youtu.be/ggWyUEuGcWY
Leave (Get Out)
I make it 112 embedded videos &, finally, the thread is starting to slow down on loading. Still perfectly acceptable, though.
Carmen Lundy – Everything I Need
http://youtu.be/_pVxmYkztFk
Lisa Fischer – Beneath The Wings Of An Angel
Sorry. I couldn’t resist getting up to 200 comments! Besides, Lisa and Carmen are superb vocalists deserving a place on the thread.
Tigger, we can get up to 300, I’m sure!
200 soulful women? That’s the tip of the soulberg!
OK – let’s go for 300:
Ann Sexton – You’ve Been Gone Too Long
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_Q-EAVYfeE
Spanky Wilson – Sunshine of Your Love
What? No Oleta Adams?
Perhaps a bit too smooth and yacht rocky for The Afterword, but do give this a spin and feel the musical sophistication.
(First post on this wonderful new site – well done and sincerest gratitude to you techies who worked so devotedly to refloat the good ship and also to the Continuity Afterworders on Facebook, sorry I just could not join you. FB – what a hideous place).
Good to have you back, dog!
Where did that go? Heres the link again – I hope!
(If no luck it’s Hold Me For A While)
It works, it works. Hip, hip.
Sade – No Ordinary Pain
Mica Paris – Should’ve Known Better
A-ha, unless I’ve overlooked it, no-one has yet suggested Sugar Pie De Santo and the magnificent Soulful Dress.
ave we ad this yet?
The alleged inspiration for “Brown Sugar” was Marsha Hunt.
Here she is performing Walk On Gilded Splinters
D’oh!
Ok, I get the picture.
In mitigation I came to this thread late and there is a hell of a lot up above.
Dyan Birch was one of the lead singers of Arrival, which evolved into Kokomo. I think her voice fits in with the vibe of this thread.
Please excuse the Savile. Arrival with Friends:
