What does it sound like?:
After The Night The Day Will Surely Come – the hope of us all after these horrible couple of years. The lockdowns that people across the globe have experienced has spawned a host of releases by artists alone at home or at least solo. Thoughtful reflective stuff. Nick Cave at the Alexandra Palace. Abdullah Ibrahim, the veteran jazz pianist recorded a solo effort at Hirzinger Hall in East Germany – Solotude if you want to explore. And then there is this release by Kyle Shpeherd, another South African and clearly influenced by Ibrahim and the overall South African jazz tradition.
But no solo jazz improvisational piano escapes the influence of Keith Jarrett and sure enough Side 1 track 1 is called “For Keith”. KJ has had multiple strokes and won’t play again. I am sure he would be pleased with this tribute. It is not the flamboyant, groaning, rambunctious improvisation we get often from KJ. This tribute is more like the reserved contemplative playing we got on Melodies At Night With You – his first effort after chronic fatigue harnessed him for a period.
Kyle Shepherd, though unknown to me is a highly accomplished musician with many awards and recordings to his name.Of his 7 albums this is his first on vinyl. He appears to be quite prolific in the world of soundtracks. You may be familiar with Barakat.
I discovered this record via an association with Chris and Matt at Matsuli Records who have put out a host of wonderful reissues of South African jazz and funk records from the early seventies to more recent times. As with all their records it is a wonderful package, thick cardboard 180 gram vinyl and downloads included. The issue is limited to 500.
What does it all *mean*?
The South African jazz tradition is a wonderful thing. I don’t know what it is, but I know it when I hear it.
Goes well with…
