What does it sound like?:
What began as an intended one off release in 2014, when the current line up of the band began touring again, has become something of an annual event in the Crimson calendar these days, now reaching its eight instalment. After last year’s set ended up commemorating a tour that never was, the 2021 US tour is now finally underway, so this new two cd set acts as a celebration of those particularly glad tidings. As usual, it’s a mixture of live material featuring various line ups, together with alternate takes, rehearsals and extracts from studio recordings – 22 of the 29 pieces here are previously unavailable on cd. The first disc showcases the groundbreaking work of the band’s drummers and percussionists, which seems only fitting for an outfit that has performed since 2014 with three drummers arrayed across the front of the stage – Indiscipline, Level Five and Devil Dogs of Tessellation Row really give a great insight into their unique array of talents and cutting edge inventiveness. The second disc gives us a more song based wander through the band’s fifty odd year back pages – standouts for me are Dawn Song, Cadence and Cascade, Formentera Lady, and of course the regular set finale, the majestic and mighty Starless. As usual, there’s a super booklet that has an introduction from Robert Fripp and extensive notes, which again focus on the band’s drummers, by veteran Crimson chronicler Sid Smith. Another superbly put together set, and very reasonably priced too – great value for your hard earned money!
What does it all *mean*?
Also included is a sneak preview from the forthcoming box set of Fripp’s Exposures album, something I’m very much looking forward to hearing.
Goes well with…
Hoping we might see one more run of UK dates by the band before they call it a day.
Might suit people who like…
These sets are really aimed solely at the hard core fan base rather than newcomers who are just dipping their toe into Crimson’s world.
