This was a riot, the most fun I’ve had at a gig in ages. Katzenjammer are a bit like a pop folk Spice Girls – each one with their own personality, and presumably their own following. For 90 minutes they traded vocals, instruments, and put on a real show. Though a couple of the slower numbers showed that they’ve got real musical chops too. I’ve loved the records for a few years, but the live experience is something else. They left the stage to the strains of Kiss’ ‘Crazy Nights’. Indeed.
The audience:
Impressive spread. Indie kids, grey haired men, and a rather charming middle aged couple from Oxford in front of us who’d brought their teenage kids with them.
It made me think..
I spent years going to see indie guitar bands who stare at their shoes. I was wrong.
This is very encouraging for Emmylou Harris’ warm up at Cropredy on Thursday night.
Agreed. Saw the Katz in Manchester last night and blew the roof off the Ruby Lounge. Huge fun, more hooks than an anglers tacklebox and a great rapport with the audience. Cropready and Cambridge Folk Festival to come. You lucky people!

A little late in replying but I was at Nottingham. Fantastic gig at a great venue, but how do you begin to describe Katzenjammer?
It was the start of a purple patch of gigging for us. Following Katzenjammer, we saw Striking Matches in Bristol the next night, then up to York to see The Paper Aeroplanes on the Sunday and returning to York on the Tuesday to see Eddie Reader. I’m not sure I’ve ever done gigs back to back never mind 4 in 5 nights.
I’ll try post separately on Striking Matches who probably made it into the best top 5 gigs I’ve ever seen.
