Very nice. She really still has it. Nice to see that beaming smile towards the end when she knew she’d done a really good job on the song.
My darker side couldn’t help observing, in that outfit and when she was really getting into it and bouncing up and down, a sudden memory of The Leaping Nuns Of Norwich.
Doing what she does so well….singing…absolutely brilliant and yes nice to see her smile at the end…and boy Rainy Night In Soho is one of Shane’s very best songs.
What a superb singer she is.
Easy to forget amongst the “Skinhead O’Connor” jibes and the Catholic church controversies, and other forthright opinions.
The emotion put into each song is clearly visible and audible
She has recorded many, many a fine tune – the voice of an angel. But like many, many an angel she is also obviously bonkers. And let’s face it, this performance is equally bonkers – Handmaid’s Tale meets Islam and nerves straining to overcome flatness and off keyness. She almost gets it back towards the end but she doesn’t.
I’ll try Rainy Night in Soho when I feel stronger
“Technically” it’s better but not so much “her” song.
Apropos the comments made below by @max-the-dog, I had me pretty much a binge on her the RTE appearances courtesy youtube. This, arguably at the nadir of her issues, shouldn’t work at all but is does, in spades.
Absolutely fantastic. Technically flawed for sure – her singing often is – but that naturally beautiful voice and her utter fearlessness as a performer is magnificent. As indeed is the best of her usually underrated songwriting. The cheeky wave and the smile at the end just melts my heart.
I’ve been away from the house all day but was going to post the videos above when I got home – delighted that @retropath2 beat me to it. She caused quite a stir with last night’s appearance on The Late Late Show and in a good way. There was an interview in-between the two songs and she came across as stable and happy in herself. There’s a lot of love for Naid in this country today that has been with-held for years. I really hope this is the start of a revival in her fortunes and popularity.
The Late Late Show has usually been a good place for Sinead – she has a nice relationship with current host Ryan Tubridy, but watch this beautiful appearance in ’93 with original host Gay Byrne – they had a remarkable chemistry whenever she was a guest.
Watching the above it occurs to me – and the recent Prince release only reinforces the point – that Nothing Compares 2 U is one of the best songs of the last 30 years but if Sinéad hadn’t recorded it I would not know that.
I think for most of my pop loving years I’ve been hung up on the band-as-gang and the genius creator without awarding sufficient respect to the value of the performer..
Great singers can do that. Aretha did it with “Respect”. Peggy Lee did it with “Fever”.
Not having written the bulk of your material is not a thing to be sneered at. Interpretation (and arrangement) are probably more than half of it, with songs and the singing of ’em.
She’s a brave woman who has wrestled with more demons than many and STILL comes up smiling with that gloriously cheeky litle wave ‘n’ grin at the end of a cracking performance. I just wanna give her a hug!
I have realised why she looks so sweaty and pasty. (Sorry, it’s true.) The hijab may contribute, but it is the hefty pancake covering her face that is really making her glow. Necessary to cover up the appearance at her last Late show appearance, below. If you look close you can still see the outlines of those letters above.
It’s still a great performance, mind
( I have just realised I have shown this clip twice, such is my fascination. And read she supposedly had the said tattoos layered off. Not well enough, I fear, or is it my overly clinical eye?)

Fuck. Brilliant. Chills.

Sinead would rank in my top 5 female singers – I think she has a beautiful voice and has written some great songs too

Dare I mention Rachel Dolezal?
Dare away.
Just. This. Just. Made. Me. Cry.

Hate replying to my own post, but the sad news just broke that Gay Byrne passed away earlier today…https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2019/1104/1088580-gay-byrne/

I agree with that @Sewer-Robot if ever there was an example of someone taking ownership of another writers song then this is it.
Great singers can do that. Aretha did it with “Respect”. Peggy Lee did it with “Fever”.

Liz Fraser did it with Song To The Siren.
This should be a thread of its own.
I nominate The Shirelles Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow.
As an obsessive Prince fan, I totally agree. See also: Manic Monday.
I thought this chat with her on the same show was interesting.

She’s written so many great songs over the years. Like this one

Nothing Compares 2 U is too plaintive for me. How about this.
Sheeeeeeeet! That’s thirty years old now. I bought Mind Bomb on the day it came out. A brilliantly paced album.
Phoning it in, as usual.
Here’s another one where she barely makes an effort.
Strangely prescient of Heloise Letissier, oui?
