I’ve been doing some kamikaze Wordling on the archive they’ve just put up, not giving a toss how many lines I do it in or whether I bust. I use the previous winning word as my start word, no matter how eccentric (and often get congratulated by the Bot for my bravery). The main finding from this in-depth research is that it doesn’t matter a damn what word you start with, although if the winning word contains an X or a Z they’re unlikely to come up two days running. It’s as much about eliminating letters as finding the right ones. This will be a statement of the bleedin’ obvious to some of you, but anyway I’m going to abandon my slavish attachment to the one start word and see where that gets me this month.
If you do a deep Google search you will stumble across mind-numbingly boring statistical sites devoted to best strategies re succeeding at Wordle. All agree one thing – if you want to consistently get as close to a daily 3 as possible then your starter word is, over time, critical. Apparently the “best” starters (all found in the Wordle dictionary) are
“salet” 3.42117
“reast” 3.42246
“trace” 3.43276
“crate” 3.43276
“slate” 3.43462.
Personally, and it is personally, I think using safe starters takes the fun out of the game (rather like those annoying fuckers who know all the obscure Scrabble words) but hey, ho each to his own.
I will stick to my patented “first 5 letter word on Radio 4” strategy which as you all know usually results in me welcoming Spoonie back where he belongs.
When I said doesn’t matter a damn, I meant gives you a consistent run of birdies, pars and bogeys. Clearly eagles or holes in one will be down to sheer blind luck. Maybe I’ll give salet a go, since it obviously gives a massive advantage over stale or least… 😉
Salet is 3.42117, stale is a disappointing 3.43462. Do pay attention.
How does STARE rate?
Worse than REAST, evidently. Whatever that is.
Stare is a totally mediocre 3.51227. You’d be a fool to use stare….
I looked long and hard before deciding it was a good start word.
Just think how many times you would win this comp if you used reast (which as any fule knows is “To
dry smoke fish or meat). Or you could throw caution to the wind, live a little and use the first starter that comes into your mind each morning. Forget about winning and trophies and adulation, come battle it out with me for Loser of the Year….
But the first word I think of each morning is Stare.

There’s studies been done that found it’s easier to do yesterdays times crossword than todays. Evidently … and bear with me here … it’s connected with sheep. You playing the boy’s version – us real men take the first five letter word no matter what: igloo or xylem, we don’t care. We roll the dice with a carefree laugh (and then go collect our spoon).
So does that mean TODAY is quite often your first word? That probably isn’t a bad one to use – though I’m sure you’ll tell me otherwise.
