I didn’t fully appreciate how good he was at the time. Naturally growing up in the 70s in Wales we were blessed by no end of brilliant players. Of course I knew he was very good, but on watching re-runs of Welsh and Lions internationals I realised just how magnificent he was. Peerless.
He played against England 10 times, won every one 🙂
One of the best 15s there ever was, and certainly the best Wales has ever seen. Pretty much invented the idea of the counterattacking fullback. What a player.
If you believe a lot of the frothier media outlets nowadays, sporting and entertainment “legends” are two a penny.
But without question JPR was a true legend. What a life.

Two fun trivia facts:
He won the Junior British Open at Wimbledon.
He’s one of the few players to be capped as both a back and as a forward.
And he didn’t fully retire from rugby until he was 54!
Saw him play a couple of times on TV. Lock-ins at a pub in West Wales when I was living over there.
Magnificent player. R.I.P.

* Serge Blanco was also pretty great
