It was one of those great moments, my mother in law had offered to have our little ones staying with her for the night so we had the chance for a random Thursday night out.
What with work in the morning we decided to opt for a bit of food & then whatever was playing at the one screen cinema 5 minutes down the road. Luckily this is the beautiful Regent cinema in Marple, a tiny independent theatre which still values the mid-film interval & ice creams being sold at front.
The film showing was the new Olivia Colman one called Joyride. An Irish coming of age drama/comedy about a new mother Joy (Colman) who, when passed out in the back with her one week old baby, has her taxi stolen by a 12 year old (the promising Charlie Reid). He has just scarpered with some second hand stolen money that his Da has taken from a charity night to honour his recently deceased Ma.
What follows is a story with more holes in it than Swiss cheese & I suspect the title was thought of before an idea was flushed out….. Basically, Joy is en route to giving her unwanted child away before hopping on a plane to Lanzarote & Mully just wants to get away from his Dad. What follows is a road trip of sorts & a blossoming of an odd friendship.
There is a moment in this film when Tommy Tiernan (playing the captain of a small car ferry) plays the Home & Away theme tune on a tin whistle. It will likely be my abiding memory as unfortunately it was probably one of the high points of the 94 minute running time.
The audience:
There were about 15 people watching the film in this gorgeous cinema. We were the youngest by about 20 years
It made me think..
even the exquisite acting of Olivia Colman cannot rescue a poor film

Blimey, popping one out at the age of 48 is a pretty risky prospect I’d have thought.

Mid film interval? Not in favour of that, unless it is more than 3 hours long and intended by the director. Had that interrupting many films when I lived in Switzerland as the punters couldn’t last 2 hours without a smoke break. They always seemed to choose a random place to insert the “kurze pause”, so annoying

At least it probably postponed OC having to go home for the first time in about 17 years
