Amazon Prime is a bit lacking in the film and TV stakes compared to Netflix, but there is a rich collection of docs on there
(Just needs a bit of searching)
I find searching much easier from the computer – go to Amazon’s website, select Prime Video, search and “Add to Watch List” (the + sign in the middle).
There are three worth seeing: Grant Gee’s “Joy Division” doc, Anton Corbijn’s “Control” (a film with actors) and Michael Winterbottom’s retelling of the Factory Records story, “24 Hour Party People”, which is a laugh – Steve Coogan as Tony Wilson.
As is Antony H Wilson.
Its a rare film where I’ve watched it, watched it with commentaries and read the book. Oddly, I’ve not bought the soundtrack (because I mostly had it).
Will search out Grant Gee’s doc (got the other two on DVD – anyone remember those? – big back in the 90s unlike myself who continued to get slowly bigger thereafter)
Stooges Gimme Danger was a recent view.
Couple of Beatles related docs (bit American-centric though).
Think there’s one about the folly of Apple (or was that Sky Arts?)
True. UK may have more. Copyright, international rights, other stuff. Surprised that there’s that much difference between UK and Ireland
.com vs .Co.uk I suppose
(or .ie)
Until Spring this year, it was possible to stream shows from the UK site by using a UK bank account and address. One day with no warning, they pulled the plug and channels like Starz and Sundance disappeared overnight; in doing so, they took whatever series streams you’d bought and were halfway through watching along with them. Ended up having to pay through the nose for a full box set of Le Bureau from Amazon France
Also recommend “Can’t Stand Losing You” which i saw on prime. A documentary about The Police based on Andy Summers’ memoir and featuring the man himself. He was very much the lukewarm water in that band
That’s an interesting perspective. Winter crowdfunded the preservation of Zappa’s vault of audio and video as the start point for making the documentary, and whilst I think it’s done a good job of shedding light on Frank as a person, there’s not a whole lot of music in it. It will be down to the Zappa family Trust to decide what else gets to see the light of day.
I’m not that bothered about Rush but the doc Time Stand Still is excellent. I love ZZ Top and the doc is superb. Both on Netflix. Finally there’s one called Hired Gun about sidemen (though a number are women) which is £1.99 on Prime but well worth it.
Not exactly a documentary but as a late convert to Taylor Swift I enjoyed her Long Pond sessions where she talks about each of the songs before doing an acoustic version.
(it mildly amuses me that she seems delighted that Aaron Dessner, would be on a record with her. They do fine as artists but Folklore must have sold way more than the National do)
This is the correct answer

Any tips?
Hard to find docs on AP Ireland as their on screen menu has no doc category
Search? Found me the rugby today
I did search, but as mentioned in my original post, there is no doc category in AP Ireland’s on screen menu
Also a tad difficult to search for something if you don’t have a name

So which is @Leedsboy recommending? A documentary or a scripted film with actors (Control), am getting confused
Regardless, if you like JD they’re both worth a watch. 24HPP is worth a watch even if you don’t like music.
Seen that one
If you get a chance, it’s worth watching 24HPP with the director’s commentaries. Hooky is, as you might expect, entertaining.

The documentary – it’s called Joy Division.
So not by Anton Corbijn, or are there two docs?
I have checked and I was wrong. It’s directed by Grant Gee and written by Jon Savage. Anton Corbijn is in it – which confused the very confusable me.

Are you in the UK, RD? Think the choice of shows on AP there is much wider than here in Ireland

VPN. Sorted

Does anyone have any other recommendations for good music documentaries?
I have Amazon Prime and, thanks to the £1.99 offer, Disney+ for a month. And I have some moody friends for the others.
And, due to injury, I have plenty of time to watch them.
A brand new one about the making of Tom P’s wonderful Wildflowers has just gone up on YT.
Less specifically…
NF has a whole section on music docs.
Would imagine BBC iPlayer must have quite a few goodies, too
There was a David Rodigan doc on iPlayer in September that was good.
Thanks for the tip, Leedsboy.
Will watch that.

Zappa directed by Alex Winter is on the i player. Not a Zappa fan but it gave me a good insight into why people are so obsessed with his music.

When digging through NF the other day, i came upon an interesting-looking doc about John Otway. Anyone here know any more about it?
Rock And Rolls Greatest Failure.
Otway story told in Otway style, a great watch.
Cheers, RD, I shall give it a go
Never 100%sure if he’s deluded, supremely confident, or a bit eccentric
(all of the above probably)
Nice recent interview with him here. “I can’t see much of what I’ve done that I couldn’t do a hell of a lot better.”
