Grim news…saw it on a Facebook alert. Some sanctimonious prick decided it would be appropriate to comment that thousands of children are dying every day from made-made disasters, and we should spare a thought for them, and do we know Joni personally etc. He was quite rightly shot down in flames.
Really? She’s an extraordinary talent. Her career arc from flowers-in-her-hair folkie to free-jazz poetess is unique, and incredibly accomplished. She’s had both commercial and uncompromised artistic success, and leaves a body of work – including her extraordinary paintings – few can rival. Let’s celebrate her while she still lives – as long she may,
While I endorse Mr. Sauce’s measured reply, I’m afraid I have a more robust view of the assertion that she’s “hardly been that important”. I don’t feel the need to spell it out, as the assertion can only have originated from a position of ignorance.
I said the other day that I didn’t know what the phrase “artistic merit” means in the context of pop music, but tell you what: if ever an artist existed in pop, Joni is it. Utterly remarkable. That run of 70s albums – Blue, For The Roses, Court & Spark, The Hissing of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Mingus: it’s never been equaled. (I left Don Juan out because I don’t adore it, but it’s still remarkable.)
I don’t really know what she is, but by god, she’s the real thing. By comparison, Bowie looks like an infant, and I *love* Bowie.
If there is an old lady with an incurable disease in a coma unresponsive to treatment, would we really want her to ‘pull through’. At what point should we accept that the end is here, that heroic intervention is pointless and that we should wish for a peaceful passing instead? It’s terribly sad but death is inevitable for us all.
As for Joni. I think she is a wonderful woman who deserves all the garlands bestowed upon her. I’m eternally grateful for Hejira, which spiced up my sex life no end (as @minibreakfastibreak knows only too well). I wish her well, wherever she goes.
Well, Tigger, you should be talking about another lady who *isn’t* in a coma, then she’d have something in common with Joni other than being a lady. Get a grip, ffs.
That’s what I’m trying to do with my ponderings on end of life. Actually, the gender of the person isn’t relevant.
Would you want your family to pull the plug or keep you alive for as long as possible (given the circumstances of an incurable disease, no response to treatment and a coma)?
Joni Mitchell “has hardly been that important.” Really? To me she has.
I rarely listen to Bowie anymore. I’ve never stopped listening to Joni Mitchell.
I’m not a person who would argue with Madonna. To everyone currently in hospital – get well soon.
Madonna has also cited Mitchell as the first female artist that really spoke to her as a teenager; “I was really, really into Joni Mitchell. I knew every word to Court and Spark; I worshipped her when I was in high school. Blue is amazing. I would have to say of all the women I’ve heard, she had the most profound effect on me from a lyrical point of view.”

At least it’s not Bowie (Yet). I don’t want to see the woman in her casket but she has hardly been that important to warrant the ghouls of ‘No more’.

Damn right, Foxy. And the reason she hasn’t been more “influential” is that nobody else can do what she does.

This, right here, is the truth.

And I love you too, Bob. Not in some wishy-washy girlie way, but deeply and strongly, like a steam train rushing through a damp, dark tunnel.

I’ve been pondering end of life.

Er – she’s not in a coma. Mootness, I think.
