Cancer got him at 73. One of the greatest directors of live music films there has been, as well as more typical narrative offerings that won multiple Oscars such as Philadelphia and Silence of the Lambs.

A sad loss of a great talent.

Some of you might not know, he also directed a pop video for New Order …and rather cool it is too. No fast cuts or fancy FX , just long lingering shots of the band …an almost still life study of the group playing the song, full length cut, live in their studio (I think in Cheetham Hill Manchester).

God, I love that video! Gillian turning up the Voyetra at the beginning. Barney and Hooky duelling at the end. Yeah, it was in Cheetham Hill rehearsal rooms, an old gas board building where they used to recondition cookers. When they first sent out the video it went out with two left channels instead of a left and a right, and the band didn’t realise until about five years later when they heard it by chance in a bar in Austin before a gig.

I did know, but was reminded about it in Hooky’s book. Great track, great video.

What a talent. If all he’d done was Stop Making Sense, it would have been a life worth living.

Something Wild is a great mid-80s black-ish comedy, too.

Bizarre but rather brilliant film. The switch in mood from the screwball first half (black haired Melanie Griffith) to the psychotic stalker second half (blonde Melanie) is unlike any other film I can think of.
Junior Wells says
yeah ,great music too as always

As concert films go Stop Making Sense is justly celebrated but I’m also very fond of his rather more low-key Storefront Hitchcock, in which Robyn Hitchcock runs through a bunch of songs and deadpan surrealistic monologues while standing in a shop window in New York. Of minority interest certainly, but utterly charming.
