I first heard Johnnie Walker at midnight on 14th August 1967, when Radio Caroline continued broadcasting, whilst my local pirate station Radio 270 closed down at 11.59, rather than breach the Marine & Broadcasting (Offences) Act.
Despite a signal that faded in and out, his late night show over the next few weeks was compulsory listening.
RIP Johnnie – A great broadcaster, with a lovely warm style, and a constant sense of mischief
Johnnie Walker on Radio 2 Drivetime – helped get John Otway to Number 1.
Sound Of The Seventies interview with Glen Matlock. Spoke to him about his influence, career, and latest music. Not just “Glen, you were in the Sex Pistols”
The very personification of a good DJ as opposed to the gob on a stick ego trippers usually in this job. I liked him even more when he revealed his summer holiday was riding his Harley down to the south of France for a few weeks camping. Top bloke.
Stopped listening to music radio around 1978 but before that two JW moments:
“I’m going to play Suite Judy: Blue Eyes all the way through”
and
“Here’s Bob Marley and the Wailers and No Woman, No Cry Live at the Lyceum”.
Both of these, if memory serves me well and the wheel is still on fire, were broadcast at lunchtime….

Almost the last of the great DJs from the 60s who championed non chart and album based music.
Oh dear. Thought this might be on the cards when he retired recently. Shame it happened so quickly
One of the last great dj’s with a love of music rather than inane chat and celebrity.

I met him once, very briefly, and he signed this for me:
He was charming.
