I know there are recordings of John Peel’s shows elsewhere on the internet but some July 1967 shows have been uploaded to Mixcloud recently. Fascinating to listen to although it confirms my long held view that most people bought the Incredible String Band’s ‘The 5000 Spirits or The Layers of The Onion’ for the sleeve rather than the actual music.

Well, I’ve landed randomly on one and it’s Amen Corner’s studio version of ‘Gin House Blues’ – fantastic!
I know it’s received music critic wisdom that the Incredible String Band’s ‘The 5000 Spirits or The Layers of The Onion’ is great. I never received that. Preferring to remain ignorant, I find it annoying pish, as I do the band.
The biggest problem for me with the ISB was Robin Williamson’s voice. I have been told it is an acquired taste and it is one that I have never acquired.
True. I have learned to tolerate it in smallish doses, when the song justifies a bit of extra effort.
Thanks for those links. I was born some years after that ISB album and I rather like it (although ‘Hangman’s…’ is better), but each to their own. The Zodiac Cosmic Sounds album was bobbins though.
