Press record on your TV boxes everybody. Auntie is showing John Martyn : Rock Goes To College concert from Reading in 1978 on BBC2 at 10:45pm this Saturday October 12th.
Del Amitri : Legends Of The Mall is being shown immediately after, so might be an idea to record that as well.

There have been a number of similar recently, mainly from the Hitchen Regal. The Undertones are currently on iPlayer, Joe Jackson and The Specials previously. I have made, er, safety copies for research purposes, of most I think, if anyone needs ‘help’.

I feel obliged to offer my services as emergency backup bloke as well.

Out of interest folks @vulpes-vulpes
I treasure every minute of the original BBC VHS “At The BBC”, ……… shame I ain’t got a VHS player.
The DVD “At The BBC” has most if not all of the RGTC from Reading Uni 1978 and Stirling Uni 1981. Some extra BBC stuff is available on 2 CDs JM “In Concert” and JM “In Session” in glorious 5.1 DTS (whatever that is)!
craig42blue says
The DVD has the 5.1DTS D’Oh
Vulpes Vulpes says
Hi Craig, are we talking entirely about John Martyn here?
craig42blue says
@vulpes-vulpes
Yes, purely John Martyn – if there is anything you’d like to hear, let me know.
Originally I had the two JM – RGTC broadcasts (audio only) courtesy of TDK AD C60s, but fortunately the broadcasts are on the 2006 DVD “John Martyn At The BBC” featuring 5.1 DTS versions.

I was at that Joe Jackson Rock Goes to College gig at Hatfield Polytechnic. No – honestly, I was.

If you give me a clue as to your appearance I’ll look out for you in the crowd scenes. I saw Joe Jackson at Eric’s in The Pool of Life when he was touring Look Sharp! He along with his bandmates were ensconced in a corner of The Grapes before the gig sampling a few pints and swapping pin badges with the great unwashed. Nice chap. Rather tall.

Part of what was the Regal is now my doctor’s surgery.

I studied at the University of Life.
Ents were not on the curriculum

Wot no talking tree thingies?
Jaygee says
Left those behind when I got expelled from the School of Hard Knocks

The AC/DC one is fascinating because this is a band who later became enormous, largely based on the songs they had already released by this time, but only the first couple of rows of students at the University of Essex seem to be really into it. The whole thing is on YouTube, but compare Whole Lotta Rosie from Wivenhoe to the one from River Plate.

I am pals with the man at Aunty Beeb who has been recovering the JM set from the tapes. It has apparently been a bit of an effort. It should look and sound lovely now.

Great concert from John Martyn. I had always thought songs like One World, Dealer and Big Muff were heavily reliant on studio trickery. But, live and solo, Martyn pulled them off superbly. Thanks for the heads up about the programme and full marks to the man at Aunty Beeb.

I did wonder if he was suffering from a cold as he seemed to wipe his nose rather a lot.*

Annoyingly my BT box gave up the ghost on Thursday, so I watched it but I couldn’t record it. Still it’s on the iPlayer for a month, so I might watch again before it disappears.
I always smile at the number of people you can see, with a gasper on the go, those were the days.
pencilsqueezer says
Oops wrong thread. I got distracted by Pobol Y Cwm.
hubert rawlinson says
@pencilsqueezer it appears that Pobol Y Cwm is fifty years old today I hope you’re celebrating.
pencilsqueezer says
I know it’s frightfully exciting. I shall eat a couple of slices of Bara Brith and wash it down with lashings of tea.
hubert rawlinson says
Hope you had bara lawr for breakfast.
pencilsqueezer says
No. They didn’t have any at my local supermarket when I did my grocery shopping on Monday. No peaches either. Big swizz.
fentonsteve says
I made a safety copy with get_iplayer so can ‘help’.
