News filtering through that John Douglas of the Trashcan Sinatras has passed away after a short illness. Some may know him as Eddi Reader’s better half and I think he was a very occasional poster on this forum, keeping us up to date with TCS news.
Particularly devastating as the Trashcans had just released their latest album after the usual long hiatus.

Explains why Ms. Reader cancelled all her summer festival shows at short notice, citing a more urgent need to be at home instead. I sorta suspected something like this.
One of the long delays between TCS albums was John’s treatment for colitis.
The Trashcans did a sort of impromptu gig around a video shoot in Irvine a couple of months ago. First time they’d all been together for 8 years I believe.
I know nothing of them personally but the Trashcans have long been a favourite of mine. I bought the 7 inch of Only Tongue Can Tell the day I finished my A levels in 1990. Loved them ever since.
So this is very sad particularly as the new album only came out last Friday. It’s a blinder. Glad he made it to see the release then and hope he was still able to enjoy it a little. RIP.
Ah no I have been listening to the new album all this week and loving it . Such sad news RIP
His song “Wild Mountainside” is the highlight of Eddi’s album The Songs of Robert Burns – for me at least.
Wild Mountainside is a career highlight, and would be so for any songwriter. One of my DIDs.
I came late to The Trashcan Sinatras – I had been aware of them (it’s such a good bandname, who couldn’t be aware of them?). But I only started really listening to them when I heard Oranges And Apples. Astoundingly good songwriting and albums – like a folk Blue Nile. I shall play some albums today.
Such sad news.
This song always makes me weep. All the more so now…
I saw them support The Buzzcocks on my birthday in 1999 in Farnham. Been following them ever since.
