I’ve only recently discovered the joy of Joe Walsh’s music. As less of a fan of The Eagles I just didn’t bother.
But just the fact that he called an album The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get says something, apart from the fact that he used to enjoy a beverage or five.
Anyway, here’s a new favourite of mine. Some of you are a bit older than me and I’m sure this is all old news to you.
Oh he’s great. Check out The James Gang too, his pre-solo thing. “Funk #49” is stonking.
I took a punt on this album many moons ago. It’s a bit good isn’t it. The Inner Tube/Boat Weirdos/Life’s Been Good suite wees all over anything he did with the Eagles from a very great height.
If you haven’t heard it yet, Joe’s live album, You Can’t Argue With A Sick Mind is practically perfect in every way.
Agree on the live album. Brilliant. I am so ancient I remember “Life’s been good” in the charts. I had a godawful summer job in a noxious factory and the radio played it plus 5705 by City Boy and “Every day without you” by Sad Cafe endlessly.
@Twang 5705 by City Boy was a fave of mine around the same time as Life’s been good which I played endlessly – it was a gift from the first love of my life along with the Chris Rea song Fool if you think its over.
Here’s Joe from a couple of years ago, Neela.

…one of my favourites…
Yes a classic!
‘kin LOVE Joe Walsh.
I got “But Seriously Folks” AND Ry Cooder’s “Bop Til You Drop” on vinly. Both albums £5. Bargain.
Also check out Joe’s appearance on Daryl’s House, too. Seriously good. Especially “Rocky Mountain Way”.

See above 😉
Oops… what we on the QPR forum refer to as a ‘Spackman’ (The imparting of news that has already been announced)
Thanks for all the recommendations and links! I will indeed investigate further.
The best of collection I have is called Greatest Hits – Little Did He Know… btw.
Joe Walsh…..Walk Away, thank you!
Outstanding.
His best work outside of the live album “Sick Mind” as bartleby says and the James Gang stuff is his second (?) solo album …”The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get.”
“’cause the Rocky Mountain Way is better than the way we had…”
he appeared on some guitar themed YouTube channel a few months back doing a “how to buy a good guitar” show.
didn’t say a thing that was not obvious but his production style, country drawl and way around the neck had me entranced…….love the guy.
Saw Joe a few years back when he was out on the road promoting ‘Analog Man’. Fabulous.
That vocal effect with the guitar, is it a vocoder ? Anyway did Joe precede Peter Frampton with it and if yes was he the first to popularise it?
A vocoder is a synthesiser. I don’t know Joe Walsh but I’m guessing you’re talking about a talkbox.
yeah that’s it Bob – a talk box
The guitar amp output is routed to a little speaker clamped to a tube which goes in the player’s mouth. Then by changing his mouth shape in front of a microphone the guitar “talks”. I had the original 78s of “Sparky’s magic piano” which popularised the idea originally when I was a nip.
My Dad’s favourite air guitar record, so it always makes me smile.
Ironic as he detests The Eagles.
Same here. I’ve tried, but that theme tune they wrote for the Hitchhiker’s Guide was by far their career highlight in an ocean of wanky pretty boy drek for me.
They should have stuck to alternative sci-fi theme tune writing.
The Eagles – if they’d tried a bit harder they could have been the Radiophonic Workshop.
Revisionist pish. All the cover versions alone give the lie to this line of earlierworkitis.
It’s revisionist pish to try a band and not like them? wtf are you talking about?
The Eagle are brilliant, fact!
Especially Dan Dare.
Oh excuse me. I sometimes forget the rules ;-P
Is it true I’m an Eagle? Is it true I can spread my wings?
No think you’ve got the basics down. But if you try a brilliant band and don’t like them you just accept you’re wrong and move on. 🙂
But what about when you try The Eagles?
Well I agree with you on the divine Rachel anyway.
Dan Where?
There Moose there! Stop mekon out ya can’t see him.
The Dan gets everywhere on this site.
