This BBC4 documentary was shown on terrestrial last week, and is currently on the iPlayer.
It ‘explores the story of the lyric-driven French chanson and its greatest artists, including Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Juliette Greco, Anna Karina and Jane Birkin’, according to the BBC’s blurb.
And it did. Most enjoyable. There’s a playlist associated with the programme within the iPlayer window. Tetes Raides and Zaz were new to me (though I am a bit of a ‘civilian’).

Good to see Petula included in this. Her French records are pretty ace….

Petula Clark tried to snog a friend of mine about 20 years ago. I quote, “It was her birthday, she was drunk and I was younger and prettier.”
My friend looks a bit like James Robertson Justice.

James Robertson Justice was a baaaaaaaabe!
(there’s a thing you don’t often hear)

Chacun à son goût. . .
Moose the Mooche says
Gout? Yeah, it’s worst in the winter, speshly me legs. Serves me right of course…
GCU Grey Area says
My paternal granny had it. She was very crabby. I think she’d have been crabby without the gout, though.

This went off-topic way earlier than I expected.

I idolised Francois Hardy in my early teens – good to see film of her. Also didn’t realise that Serge Gainsbourg wrote ‘Poupee de Cire, Poupee de Son’ for France Galle, or that he also worked with Bardot. The lyrics of ‘Poupee’ could be read as quite subversive – what a laddo, eh!
Twang says
Most enjoyable. I lived just by Pont d’Iena where Gainsbourgh and Jane Birkin were singing, and a 10 mins walk down the Seine to St. Germaine. Made me want to leap on a plane to Paris tout de suite!

Anyone who like french ‘chanson’ should watch TV5 Monde, 8pm Saturday. They have a revolving cycle of shows but quite often its ‘Le Grand Show’ honouring someone in particular or ‘Hier Encore’ where various acts queue up to sing the more classic oeuvre.
It was on one of those recently I heard this version
