Amen. We’ve just today been invited to a wedding party in April that there Edinborough, Scotchland. Hurrah! We’ll probably make a long weekend of it – shamefully, I’ve never been other than to pass through. Having that prospect ahead should keep me going through these long dark weeks.
One of my favourite cities. I recommend a morning stroll up Calton Hill followed by lunch at the Café Royal’s circle bar if you have time. The latter is tucked away off Princes Street (in the marvellously named West Register Street).
Speaking of which, The Light has just confirmed that she can take the week,of my birthday off in Mid March, so I’m arranging a cheap trip to Venice (and it can be cheap that time of year; flights and three nights in a cheap hotel will be about a hundred quid each). Hurrah! That will give me plenty to think about until the evening skies start to lighten.
I made my first resolution apart from feeble get fit or stop drinking ones in the past. Decided in 2016 to read 52 books, see 52 new release films and buy 52 new release albums. Respective totals to date are (adopts laconic Peelesque tone)… errr somewhat unsurprisingly errr nil, nil and errr indeed nil.
Well it’s my birthday on Sunday and my twins were 8 on Monday so early January is good fun in our house. And a wet, cold January is the best time to enjoy a proper pub with warm beer.
Yes, planning things. Like, buying concert tickets in time, Neil Young and Wilco are touring Europe this year. Also reminding myself to tell bad people they are bad people. Possibly with a smiling face.
Mrs. T’s birthday. Traditionally I’m all out of present ideas after Christmas so we do something together like have a night away somewhere nice – spa hotel, night in London with theatre/ dinner etc. Which is great.
Filling 31 days between December and February. How long is it acceptable to say to someone “Happy new year, did you have a good christmas”. How many days is it before it is acceptable to throttle the inquisitor?
Well, I love winter and January is a proper winter month, so I’m enjoying it very much.
It’s full on snow and cold here in Sweden – last night when I walked home from work it was -19C, which is fairly cold for Stockholm. Up north they had -39 or something like that.
So January is wonderful at the moment! 🙂
You lot get to keep your Christmas lights up until Shrove Tuesday. We have to take ours down immediately after New Year in order to accentuate the misery.
Also you get proper snow that sticks around, reflecting the light back and cheering the place up.
It was an artificial tree, so infinitygreens is probably more accurate.
I could have kept it until the Apocalypse and it would still be green (underneath the snow-like layer of dust).
January Down Under is pretty good, particularly in Melbourne. The weather is generally delightful* so there is a lot of stuff happening. Cricket, tennis, lots of live music as many artists escape Winter on the other side of the world (saw Gary Clark Jnr last night). Tonight brings an outdoor food festival, with a Big Bash T20 match on the weekend. Next week the Australian Open.
* Ignoring bushfires and flooding rains
I will come out of my shell briefly to attend the now compulsory Manchester Beer Festival on the 21st. It has moved to my old stomping ground so I shall be wallowing in nostalgia and boring everyone with tales of past successes and trivia.
January? Beginning of summer. The days are getting longer, the daffs are shooting, the awful longueurs of the perineum (Christmas to New Year) are behind us. It’s all upwards now till October.
January? Magic. Curently on the Norwegian coastal voyage in the Arctic Circle. We saw the Aurora Borealis dance across the heavens last night and it’s snowing now so I’m very happy. Oh, and the temperature has risen to a very balmy -3c from around -14c.

Planning things to do when the weather cheers up a bit? I’m no fan, and like to have things to look forward to when it’s cold and grey outside.

My birthday is in January, so that makes it a month of joy and happy laughter for everyone.
I’m a January birthday boy too. It’s probably why I love the blues, my favourite colour is blue and I’m such a bluemin’ bundle of joy.

Clive, the first week hasn’t finished yet – you can buy an album and watch a film tomorrow. Just on the book front don’t choose War and Peace.
I’m with you on that one Gatz.
New Bowie!
Its what I look forward to while it seems everyone else is enjoying December.

These chaps are none too convinced either
I bloody love that record.
@rubyblue – fantastic, isn’t it? That song and Magic are amongst the best of Macca-esque 70’s pop, which is A Very Fine Thing Indeed.
@dougiej Absolutely. Reminds me of my pop-rock era (aged about 6, but went on for some time and never really went away).

Happy birthday, Leedsboy.
Thank you Izzy.

That’s what January should be.
I’ll tell you a secret – one year I kept my Christmas tree until the day after my birthday.
I’m a leo*…
*My birthday is in August…late August…the 21st actually…
Ha ha! They ain’t called evergreens for nothing.

Weather is less delightful in Brisbane, but with you on everything else.
Pommieland appreciates your attempts to “cheer” us up as we set about building a fleet of arks.
Planning.
Still hibernating. Ask me in March.

If there was a “Like” button I’d press it Chiz.
