I thought I might enliven early evening with a fiendlishly hard 007 knowledge test. One question at a time. Fastest fingers win. First question at 18.25pm.

Musings on the byways of popular culture

But Pointless is on….
1.) Which James Bond was a former Persuader?
1) Roger Moore
Locust in the lead!
2.) Whose employees all had facial hair?
Ah, that won’t last…unless it’s a question about two or three of the Roger Moore films, I’m lost…
Firstly – I apologise – I thought you were asking for questions. I will stop.
But no. 2 – is it Gobinda? As a Sikh I think all of his henchmen must be, by definition, facially befollicled.
Don’t apologise! The — ahem — ‘Moore’ the merrier.
Oh, and good answer, but it’s not the one i’m after…
a sort of anti-pogonophobe?
Unlike Margaret Thatcher who was definitley a pogonophobe – no-one in the cabinet ever had facial hair (except Virginia Bottomley).
Don’t know the answer.
Complete guess: Drax
(the first beardy Bond villain)
except Jaws was a henchman for Drax, so ignore my lame guessing
Drax is correct! The question applies to the book, where Jaws doesn’t feature.
Robbie Wiliams wore a long silver dress on TOTP, singing Millennium. What’s the two Bond connections with this song?
What *are* the two connections, I should say…
You Only Live Twice and Shirley Bassey
That’s one of them.
You Only Live Twice and Robbie Williams is a tranny?
The album it was on was called “I’ve been expecting you”.
Maybe number to is a bit too fiendish. Okay, number three. Or four, if we include BC’s question….
3.) What was the name of Ian Fleming’s house?
Goldeneye
DFB draws level!
A Goldeneye is a type of duck. Ian Fleming famously got the name for his most famous superspy hero from an ornithology book. Do I win a prize?
Goldeneye.
Goldeneye
Snap!
Sorry guys, according to my site activity update thingy, DFB got there first.
Okay, number tow is still up for grabs but here’s number four.
4.) Bond’s favourite handgun is/was a Walther PPK 7.65mm, but only after it was forced on him by the quartermaster, Q, following a jam. Which was the gun that jammed? Just the manufacturer will do…
a Beretta?
DFB moves into the lead!
5.) Which of the following actors have not played James Bond? Jim Carrey, Woody Allen, Barry Nelson, Herve Villechaise.
Well Woody played Jimmy Bond if we’re splitting hairs
but Carey? I avoid him at all costs
and wasn’t Nelson also Jimmy Bond?
*takes off anorak*
Just answer the blimmin question!
Herve Villechaize was Nick Nack.
So by that logic, it means Jim Carrey DID play James Bond (surely not?)
Yeah must be Carey unless he played another character with that name but not Bond himself
Jim Carrey
Beretta 418
RD scores rispeck but not an extra point, I’m afraid.
Question five, the answer I was looking for was Jim Carrey and Herve Villechaise.
DFB remains in the lead.
6.) I count three ‘Bond girls’ (i.e not M or Moneypenny) who have appeared in more than one Bond film. Name two of them and their films.
6) I’m pretty sure that Swede Maude Adams is one of them, but I only know she was in Octopussy. Was fellow Swede Britt Ekland also in two?
Maude Adams was in the Man With the Golden Gun.
Maud Adams played two different Bond Girls
Andrea Anders in Man With The Golden Gun, and Octopussy in (whatever that film was called?)
Mary Stavin was in 2 films as well.
Octopussy and A View To A Kill
Maud Adams is one, but the half belongs to Locust.
I’ll give you a clue for another one. Think further back, Connery era.. She’s wordless (unless you count snarling) in an very famous scene in her first film, but then has a more substantial role in a slightly later film.
She was also in The Man With the Golden so that’s a half-point there. I’ll leave the other two hanging.
7.) Another ‘Bond girl’ question. The first actress to share an onscreen love scene with Roger Moore is/was better known for her appearances in another set of films. Who is she and what are the other films she’s more famous for?
Madeline Smith
Previously in a batch of Hammer films, The Two Ronnies and Up Pompeii (often with her “assets” in full view)
Correct! I do believe this puts you neck and neck with DFB.
Oops, I missed Mary Stavin. In the lead!
Okay, that’s it. Quiz suspended. RD in the lead.
Am watching Doctor Who so haven’t been paying attention.
Don’t get cocky, kid!
Martine Beswick.
Is correct. Very good. Her two were From Russia With Love, where she plays one of the catfight girls, and Thunderball, in which she was Paula Caplan, sacrificial lamb.
There’s also another actress, Lizzie Warville, who was in Moonraker and For Your Eyes Only.
There was also Eunice Gayson, who was in Dr No and From Russia With Love as Sylvia Trench – she was supposed to be James Bond’s girlfriend, only the producers figured if the film’s success meant the series was going to be prolonged, it would be easier to have him canoodling guiltlessly with the female stars in each entry, so Ms Gayson’s services dispensed with.
Is the answer to 8) Random Task?
Close. The answer to number 8 was Robert Markham.
How about this – why and when were testicles changed to toenails?
Wild guess, but is it something to do with a translation and/or censorship issue on the Casino Royale novel?
I confess, I cheated…
“The book features a wince-inducing scene in which Le Chiffre, desperate to discover where Bond has hidden the cheque for 40 million francs that he needs to save his life, ties Bond naked to a cane chair with its seat cut out and proceeds to torture him by repeatedly whacking his testicles with a carpet-beater. This could clearly not be shown on television, so instead Bond was placed in a bath, his shoes removed, and viewers watched him howl with pain as, off-screen, Le Chiffre’s men attacked his toenails with pliers.”
