Doing a couple of 80 to 90 min walks a day using my rollator, which is great, although without it I’d almost certainly topple either into the road or the brambles, as my balance is fucked. I can walk unsteadily around the house unsupported, as long as there’s a wall or item of furniture to lean on should I need to.
My left leg – and to a lesser extent left arm – have been feeling incrementally weirder. I suspect the tumour is pressing that bit more firmly on the vein, and will presumably find out on the 6th of next month, when I have a consultation regarding the MRI scan I had a few weeks ago.
A week after that will come the move to my late Mum’s bungalow, supported for the first few days by my brother. The prospect is still quite scary…
Ta for the tip Nige and look after yourself. There’s a same era Tom Petty concert too. This is gold. Anyone know how one can make a, ahem, backup of these gems? @vulpes-vulpes?
Get_iPlayer is pretty good for grabbing anything that’s on the iPlayer or BBC Sounds. Reasonably easy to get the hang of for the techy-minded and it’s free/ad-free.
As Mike_H says above, Get_iPlayer is al you need. If you are on a Mac then there is also Get IPlayer Automator, which basically wraps an interface around the get_iplayer source and makes it easy to use (can download at https://github.com/Ascoware/get-iplayer-automator/releases).
If you have issues with the downloading then I have already done, so feel free to message me for “help”
I’m afraid I wimped out and used the Mac route. I already missed grabbing Tom Petty and the AWB whilst messing about with it, but I got Jackson and it’s working for future gems.
Piece of cake.
Grab get_iplayer from Github, install it.
Run it and a command line opens.
At the prompt, type in this:
“get_iplayer –url=”PUT THE LINK FROM THE RELEVANT IPLAYER PAGE IN HERE”
and it’ll start downloading the programme as an MP4 to wherever you’ve told it to stash the videos.
Top tip, find the ‘series PID’, which is the little eight character identifier for any whole series you’re interested in grabbing (the one for the Whistle Test is b006zbkl) and then type this at the prompt:
“get_iplayer –pid=b006zbkl –pid-recursive” and it’ll grab all available Whistle Test episodes for you, one after the other.
Where there’s a whole series involved, the ‘series PID’ is usually to be found by clicking through to the ‘Programme website’ page.
If you decide to go for it, please read the wiki pages; it’s really not that tricky to understand how to use the thing.
There are a few potential pratfalls – looking at my ridiculously abbreviated instructions above you’ll see what looks like a single hyphen ahead of the ‘url’ command but it needs to be a double hyphen – it’s just that the Forum page doesn’t render a double hyphen properly.
In the second example I gave, to download an entire series, the two hyphens used really are single ones!
READ THE WIKI – it won’t bite.
Here’s another double hyphen, just to prove the point: —
You’ll get results for all four of the currently-available OGWTs on the iPlayer. At the end of the listing for each one there’s an 8-character ID for that show. You can then type:
get_iplayer space dashdash pid=(the programme ID for the show you want)
An absolutely superb piece of software.
Only TV/Radio shows from the Beeb’s linear channels, schedued for broadcast within the previous 30 days, will be shown in a search.
BBC3, Red Button, iPlayer Box Sets, iPlayer exclusive stuff and BBC Podcasts will not show in searches. For that material you’ll need to access it first by it’s webpage, note or save the page’s URL or PID and then use the program to download it separately. Such use is not officially supported but it does work.
Live content cannot be downloaded using Get_iplayer because that’s not how it works.
(Also features added Zevon.)
How are you Nigel.?
His parents probably named him.
Sorry. Couldn’t help myself.

(BTW Forks sends his love, @pencilsqueezer!)
Good luck Nigel you are a brave man.
90 minute walks! That is impressive and I’m sure is good for your morale.
Good for you Nigel. You are indeed a brave chap.
Sending you very best wishes from soggy Stockholm.
👋👋✌️
You sound very stoical Nigel. Wishing you all the best.

Tcoh, these Mac snowflakes want everything GUI’d and tied in a bow.
Get yourself familiar with the command prompt chaps!

I have Petty & AWB, I’ll PM you some ‘help’
Oh thanks Steve.

So I do this
get_iplayer–url=https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m001qgbp/the-old-grey-whistle-test-jackson-browne-1976
And get error messages.
In command prompt, type:
get_iplayer space dashdash space “whistle test”
Hit return.
You’ll get results for all four of the currently-available OGWTs on the iPlayer. At the end of the listing for each one there’s an 8-character ID for that show. You can then type:
get_iplayer space dashdash pid=(the programme ID for the show you want)
Hit return again.
Like this
Your show should then start downloading and you’ll see it’s progress as it does.
Great thanks

Thank you, everyone, for your kind, off-topic wishes.
(More stubborn than brave, I’d say, but I’ll take any compliments going…)
@Twang.
Have you thought of putting in a video cassette and pressing “ record” ?
Sooooooooo twentieth century, dude.
