    To further develop from yesterday- if I told the rest of the players the answer every day, they could reliably get a hole-in-one every day. In a matchplay situation, you’d all win and I would come last.

    The punters out there would, over time, become used to having very short odds from Paddy Power for the outcome of these holes. Apart from a Black Celebration win – which would be at least 100-1.

    But if, on hole 10, I misled you all on purpose – then I (or someone else) could make a killing at Paddy Power by winning the hole against all the odds.

    That’s what insider trading is.

    If anyone can use our wordle golf game to explain derivatives – I will be grateful.

    • I used to be business development manager for derivatives at the Australian Stock Exchange.
      Options over Leedsboy’s performance or Badartdog should be lower cause of lower volatility. Me on the other hand could be high due to erratic performances though I do revert to a Spoonish mean. Lodes is all over the shop so his options would have high volatility priced in.

        • Well it depends on your intentions. As the name suggests a derivative is an instrument based on some other instrument or commodity. Thus its price is fundamentally driven by the price of the underlying – a bond price , a share price or index, a commodity whatever. You might own the underlying and want to insure against a price fall. So by taking an out option or shorting futures you will profit if the underlying falls in price thus offsetting the fall in value of your other asset. Buyers sometimes lock in prices by using derivatives to profit from upward movement in the asset they want to buy thus offsetting any extra cost when they come to buy the underlying.

          If you want to take a view on an asset price you can use derivatives to profit from that view. And they are leveraged so more potential profit/loss. However now you not only have one market to worry about you have the underlying market and the derivative market.

  174. I’ve just seen the title for this month’s play which triggered in what passes for my brain the title of a Jacobean stage play “A Mad World, My Masters” written by Thomas Middleton.

    Could I humbly suggest next March’s title is “A Mad Wordle, My Masters”?

    • It’s a grand idea, Hubert.
      You’ll have to message again nearer the time, because it’s a while away and lots of us are of that age, where we walk upstairs for something and then forget why we came up there in the first place.
      Perhaps you would like to officiate next March?
      It would be good to have a new person noting the scores on the doors.
