Just listened to the Takemitsu Orchestral Green mentioned on another thread here. Possibly playing some selections from a Qobuz playlist of old Verve Records jazz next.
Prompted by a daily feed from AmericanaUK, the latest album by Son Little, Cityfolk. At last, a name with which I am unfamiliar that scratches a soul-blues itch. A bit TTD like, or whatever he calls himself.
I saw it in 1984 and never forgot it, and rewatched it a few months ago when the Beeb put it on again. It was even bleaker than I remembered, and I had to switch off before the end as I couldn’t take any more. Astonishing, landmark filmmaking.
Since then, I’ve read Annie Jacobsen’s book Nuclear War, a very heavily researched look at what such a war would actually be like. Assuming that her (fascinating) account is accurate, even Threads doesn’t convey the awfulness and horror of what would happen. For instance, a BBC budget couldn’t show something Jacobsen describes: the explosion pulling people *into* the mushroom cloud.
I’ve had opportunities to see it but having seen enough stills I always passed. If it ever happens I hope I’m in the middle of it. Surviving would be far worse.
I’m so glad the World is till here. I’m getting married at noon and the apocalypse would have put a dampener on proceedings, and on such a lovely day too.
Thanks for the best wishes gents, it’s just occurred to me that some of you are Facebook friends, and we’re keeping this on the down low until after the ceremony (just us and two witnesses ‘officially’ know), so I’d be grateful if you don’t make any mention of it on FB until I do. Thanks.
When I was conducting weddings the couple would sometimes ask if photographs weren’t shared to Facebook before they had had the chance to put theirs up.
I once married an elderly couple who hadn’t realised they needed witnesses we gave them a couple of hours to rustle some up. Cue frantic ringing of daughters (they’d both been married before and their spouses had died). Daughters/witnesses arrived and one said to the couple “This is what happens when you try to elope”
We aren’t connect on FB, Mike. I’ve sent you a friend request which you’re free can accept or decline as you wish (but it’s the only way to see the wedding pics I’ve just put on there).
I had a hunch the Fat Palpatine was gurgling out of his sphincter as he clutches at anything that resembles an off-ramp so I ignored the brouhaha surrounding his latest bit of senile ranting and listened to some Dvořák.
I think I have enough time to listen to the whole of Ágætis Byrjun
This’ll do me
Next (are you here all night?)
Good one.
Alena Baeva and Vadym Khololenko’s new recording of Beethoven sonatas. That ignorant dangerous idiot is nothing when set against music of this beauty.
And may I be the first to ask if this wind will be so mighty as to lay low the mountains of the earth?
Nah, we’re safe up here (fact check needed)
You’re speaking too softly for the human ear – which is what I’m equipped with.
Tom Lehrer you can guess the one.
Al Stewart – Year of the Cat. We’re in North Devon on hols and for some reason it’s a holiday album.

It’s OK, it’s TACO time well for two weeks so far.
👍
Two weeks? Probably enough time for another Beatles documentary then.
But probably not enough time for Mark Lewisohn to complete volume 2 of Tune In.
Probably Odessey and Oracle (or Pet Sounds)
This seems appropriate.
Edit: we’ve got another two weeks apparently, so Forever Changes.
On the exercise bike and treadmill at the gym this morning, I was listening to XTC “Oranges & Lemons”.
This seems rather appropriate

Started the evening with this one
Ended it with this one
When I saw that TV film in 1984, it scared the shit out of me.
I also bought the DVD, but I’ve never been able to bring myself to watch it. Hah!

*Shivers*

Cockroaches and dentists survive nuclear war

Oh have a good one Gatz!
Hearty congratulations to the two of you.
Congratulations. Have a wonderful day! May your marriage be a long and happy one.
It is is gonna be a lovely day. Be in it.

Can’t remember who you are on Facebook, so you’re safe from me. Have a great day!

Hope it went well.

Aha! All is now clear.
I eloped. Good luck
Congratulations. Will there be cake?
One can only hope…
Best wishes to both of you!
Congratulations, Gatz. I was in Essex this week and it was spectacularly sunny, which should help make a special day even nicer.
Well, this proved to be wrong
Jarvis was on the money. I’d put a link up here, but it’s a hidden track.

Dvorák is entirely suitable for soundtrack the end of the world, though.
@pencilsqueezer
Can we get this printed off as an AW T shirt. It might be pricey if we have to pay per letter but who knows how much time we have left ..,
One for Netanyahu and Trump
I like Odetta’s version
I like Charles lloyd & The Marvels.
Isn’t that a version of Nottamun Town? 😉
That’s why I like it.
I quite like the Roger Taylor (Queen drummer) version….
