    Mis-read my first putt to drop a shot and go back to level for the round…

    • An old-fashioned club that people like my Grandpa used when just off the green. A wee flick of the wrist and inevitably the ball would finish but a few feet from the hole.
      I was sixteen and could drive two hundred and fifty yards or more. Problem was it was rarely straight. Off my ball would go like a guided missile straight into the rough or, this being a links course, onto the adjoining fairway. I’d hack it back, send a seven iron over the green, chip back, two putts, another six . In the meantime, grandpa would drive 150 yards as straight as an arrow, never more than ten feet off the ground. A six iron to the edge of the green, out with the mashie niblick, tap-in putt for par. An utter, utter bastard.

        • My grandpa was fine out and out gentleman who would not have hesitated to give you a sound thrashing re your insidious and insulting remarks. And he wouldn’t have enjoyed administering the thrashing one bit. No sirree.

          • Y’know Lodey I often wonder about you and sites like the one you put in your comment above. How come you know about these places, it must surely be because you search for them.             I did click on that link and when I saw what I was i immediately exited. Why the hell would anyone want to use such sites, what’s the feckin’ point. Last night I spent over 20 minutes from line 2 to line 3 because as I’ve already stated I was determined to solve the puzzle on line 3, which I did, as did many others here. The satisfaction in doing so is very enjoyable.

              • Dear Heavens, Baron – I think I have explained where I found this site down there. I too cannot imagine why, to use your phrase, the feck one would want to use such nonsense. No idea why you have got so agitated. I play Wordle very early in my morning, brain often befuddled, first five-letter word I hear on Radio 4. Works for me even though I trail your deductive score by, at the last count, 45

      • It’s a thing I do when I wake before I get up in the main. I play it on the hard setting and I mainly worry about my streak. I don’t understand how people can work out what the word is when there are at least 10 that would work. Clearly!
