I was posting a video over on the Music of Africa thread , which led me to check my books of tickets (I put all my tickets into books along with a little review of the gig). I leafed through 2002 and realised that the variety of concerts I went to that year was so much broader in scope than what I do nowadays. Some of the other years around that time are probably just as adventurous but I wanted to savour the memories of a very good year. It makes me realise that I’ve become a bit staid in my gig-going habits.
A Landmine Free World (Emmylou, John Prine, Nanci Griffith, Steve Earle & Elvis Costello) Hammersmith Odeon.
Cara Dillon at the stables; The Be Good Tanyas at the Musician in Leicester; The Grand Ole Opry, twice (“Work”); Maria Muldaur at a small club in New Orleans, followed by the Mahotella Queens at the House of Blues a couple of days later; Patty Griffin at the Paramount in Santa Fe; Baba Maal at the Roadmender in Northampton; Ruben Blades at the Lensic in Santa Fe; Orchestra Boabab at the Derngate, Northampton; Ron Sexsmith at the Stables; Gillian Welch at the Barbican; Lyle Lovett at the Barbican and finally Youssou N’Dour at the Roadmender.
I really need to get out more.
How about you – any standout years?

While we were waiting for Hailu Megia to start playing last night, @duco01 and myself where being nostalgic about favourite Stockholm venues that are no more and the gigs we’d seen there. No one year springs immediately to mind, but we were really packing them in.
There seem to be far fewer acts I want to see these days. Or is it the very high ticket prices that put me off giving something a try?

I teend to pay a lot less for gigs now than I used to, mainly because I go to folk or singer-sonwriter concerts, usually in pubs or small halls.
