No surprise really. Well done Afghanistan. Great result for them. You could feel the game drifting away from an early stage. Hopefully we’ll turn up for the next game.

I watched the Pakistan collapse on Saturday, and the England collapse on Sunday. Both the product of good bowling and keeping the pressure on, and batters being unable to do anything other than give their wickets away. The good teams so far, SA especially, seem to be able to ‘take it deep’ whereas these surprising results are teams playing T20 style and wondering why they don’t last 50 overs.
Yes this. Reading from afar (not the same as watching I know) there seems to be a real disconnect now between T20 and 50 overs. I suspect England are on the way out. Changing of the guard and all that.
The best comment I have head about this is that in T20 hitting a quick 25 from 8 and then getting out is a success, rather than using up an over in dot balls to stay in. In 50 overs your wicket has much more value. Something that England don’t to date seem to be appreciating.

Glenn Maxwell, a frustrating player at test level , just hit 106 in 44 balls and made a ton in 40 balls. Remarkable.

England’s batting has been poor and not tactically right for this format. However the bowling has been worse conceding runs far too easily and lacking any penetration….when there’s no movement in the air or off the wicket they look toothless and clueless.
There is a very good reason why we’re being very quiet about the cricket!

England have gone from best in the world to worst in the world in 4 years it seems. It’s an aging side, but the fact that hardly any of them play much 50 over cricket any more is an issue. Something has to give when you are playing months and months of 20 over and irrelevant “Hundred” cricket every year.
Well BC at least the kiwis have a spectacular backdrop to watch the ball sail over the boundary.

Incredible, but rather like the Bairstow / Carey thing, the batter could very easily have avoided it if he’d known the opposition were prepared to sink that low. He only had to face on ball against the spinner and then he could have taken all the time he liked.

I went to bed when Stoinis was dismissed which serves me right. Anyone who bet on Australia to win at that point has no respect for their money. Matches like that are why I genuinely pity people who don’t like sport.

What a poor tournament. They seem to have been playing for months to reduce to 4 teams. About 50 (?) games and there have been, I think, 2 close finishes. Ridiculous format. Whoever came up with this should be fired.
If Australia win it will have been an excellent format.

That fifth wicket has me more optimistic, however we arent great chasers and the crowd is 100,000 pro India v about 50 Aussies.
The relentlessness of Starc, Hazelwood and Cummins is so impressive. They’ve not stopped since April. Remarkable fitness and mental strength to keep pounding in. Multi format fast bowling must seriously hurt sometimes.

Well, he, it’s his decision. But yes , he ALWAYS reviews. The bowling has been excellent but fuck me, the noise of the crowd would be incredibly unsettling.
