No surprise really. Well done Afghanistan. Great result for them. You could feel the game drifting away from an early stage. Hopefully we’ll turn up for the next game.
I watched the Pakistan collapse on Saturday, and the England collapse on Sunday. Both the product of good bowling and keeping the pressure on, and batters being unable to do anything other than give their wickets away. The good teams so far, SA especially, seem to be able to ‘take it deep’ whereas these surprising results are teams playing T20 style and wondering why they don’t last 50 overs.
Yes this. Reading from afar (not the same as watching I know) there seems to be a real disconnect now between T20 and 50 overs. I suspect England are on the way out. Changing of the guard and all that.
The best comment I have head about this is that in T20 hitting a quick 25 from 8 and then getting out is a success, rather than using up an over in dot balls to stay in. In 50 overs your wicket has much more value. Something that England don’t to date seem to be appreciating.
Great, isn’t it? There’s been cricket commentary on the BBC steam-radio or online for much of this year, and Indian games are starting when I start working. Bliss.
England’s batting has been poor and not tactically right for this format. However the bowling has been worse conceding runs far too easily and lacking any penetration….when there’s no movement in the air or off the wicket they look toothless and clueless.
England have gone from best in the world to worst in the world in 4 years it seems. It’s an aging side, but the fact that hardly any of them play much 50 over cricket any more is an issue. Something has to give when you are playing months and months of 20 over and irrelevant “Hundred” cricket every year.
Australia to play ( the hapless) England. Wont be much feeling in that one will there ?
Glenn Maxwell who just scored a ton in 40 balls is out with concussion after falling out of a golf cart and now Mitch Marsh has gone home for personal reasons. Now’s your chance England.
Incredible, but rather like the Bairstow / Carey thing, the batter could very easily have avoided it if he’d known the opposition were prepared to sink that low. He only had to face on ball against the spinner and then he could have taken all the time he liked.
I went to bed when Stoinis was dismissed which serves me right. Anyone who bet on Australia to win at that point has no respect for their money. Matches like that are why I genuinely pity people who don’t like sport.
Probably escaped the attention of Afterworders in Blighty but Aust v Sth Africa for the right to play the intimidating India is on right now.
A classic sth african choke , they are on the ropes and Aussie fielding excellent.
It would your hearts to hear how good Warner has been.
What a poor tournament. They seem to have been playing for months to reduce to 4 teams. About 50 (?) games and there have been, I think, 2 close finishes. Ridiculous format. Whoever came up with this should be fired.
Anybody who knows me would probably disagree with that. However middle of the night postings from a jetlagged insomniac may have a different flavour
Anyway, 12 teams, 2 groups of 6, top 4 in each qualify for quarter finals. Would take about half the time, a little more jeopardy, but still chances for top teams to recover from unexpected losses.
The relentlessness of Starc, Hazelwood and Cummins is so impressive. They’ve not stopped since April. Remarkable fitness and mental strength to keep pounding in. Multi format fast bowling must seriously hurt sometimes.
Well, he, it’s his decision. But yes , he ALWAYS reviews. The bowling has been excellent but fuck me, the noise of the crowd would be incredibly unsettling.
Congratulations! That was quite an achievement, to put it mildly.
I see the trophy presentation went a bit awkward with Modi wandering off. That’s the trouble with slick and highly choreographed trophy presentations; someone like Modi ain’t gonna rehearse, so anything can happen.

My mate in the office next to mine is Sri Lankan.
It’s like a graveyard in here.
Junior Wells says
Just happened to flick the cricket on Aust v The Dutch, by no means easybeats these days.
Glenn Maxwell, a frustrating player at test level , just hit 106 in 44 balls and made a ton in 40 balls. Remarkable.
Black Celebration says
Biggest winning margin in ODI history. Aussie hitting their straps at the right time.

There is a very good reason why we’re being very quiet about the cricket!
Junior Wells says
Any truth in the rumour that another Englishman has been run out leaving the crease?
Freddy Steady says
Something along those lines I believe

Well BC at least the kiwis have a spectacular backdrop to watch the ball sail over the boundary.
0 – 170.

You’d think I’d have learned. 5 runs. Geezus.

Highest scoring World Cup match ever. Amazing game.

What a game!

Yep great game yesterday. I’ve got a sneaking feeling England will beat India today – you heard it here first!

Bairstow out , golden duck.
Australia loved it.

Alright, alright, give it a rest!

Come Fred , you gotta admit – what could be better from our side of things. Well, apart from JB being run out by Carey again.

Fair enough!
Maxwell…gee!

91-7 chasing 292. That might be one the greatest things I’ve witnessed in sport.
I’m going to bet my boss went to bed and missed it. And oh! I shall mock him.

Unbelievable from Maxwell today – got a funny feeling Australia are gonna win this World Cup.
Hoping we can at the very least beat the Dutch tomorrow!

Yep. Went to bed muttering about losing to Afghanistan then Maxwell – 200 while riven with cramp.
