One thing I will say is that for its many very real faults, anything remotely humane and decent that you may get from a government, conniving sweeties and all, tends to come from the Left, whilst unleashed Tories will rip your guts out through your arse, boil them and dish them up as the load of tripe that you should be grateful for, having been stupid enough to have voted for them in the first place as they laugh, mock and sneer at you.
Today, President Nedwell announced that all previous Crown land will be made available for cautious and wise developement, thus buttressing the green belt, areas of natural beauty and national parks, and just for the heck of it, Balmoral, Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace are to be made active freak museums. Elon Musk has bought Glams. Something about a monster theme park, but then he should know.

Italy will tomorrow elect a Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who makes Truss seem like a sweet angel in comparison. One of the nastiest, vilest politicians I’ve ever come across. Berlusconi was an opportunistic clown in the Johnson mould, but he was never a threat to minorities like this woman is. Her hatred of gay people and immigrants is shocking. Hard times ahead for Italy. Poveri noi.
Not very shocked by that Gary, what little I know of Italy has always portrayed it as rascist especially when it comes to the `establishment`. I do stand to be corrected about that if it is untrue,
Then again an equally obnoxious mob of dopplegangers will replace them.
What a beautiful world we live in, Trump or his equally reprehensible imitators over to the West of us, an increasing number of Right Wing governments in the midst of us and to the East of us a rabid mad man threatening nuclear genocide.
Worryingly on my recent Route 66 trip I saw loads of support for Trump for 24 even in the democratic heartland of California.
The USA is completely fucked – homelessness out if control and drug use too – it was like walking amongst the living dead.
I can remember when ladies were shag-happy teenagers, knickerless and sleeping rough on the road, skilled in rolling joints and me. They lacked the wise counsel of a responsible elder and I’m sure lived to regret a mis-spent youth. Like me.
The line seems to be ‘the Conservative governments which have spent the last dozen years repeatedly during the economy over cliffs weren’t real Conservative governments; this is a real Conservative government’, for which we can read a government which bets the farm, and everyone else’s, on giving the most financial aid to those who need it least in the vague hope it will somehow grow the economy. Utterly despicable.
Truss was trade minister under Johnson and was targeting a free trade deal with the USA. I am trade development manager for USA/Canada for the freight forwarding company I work for. I was asked to go to our Dartford office to discuss USA trade with 4 junior ministers in the Truss team. They were totally clueless- it was frightening. She took the same level of knowledge into her meeting with Lavrov and made herself look a complete idiot. This my friends is our new leader.
Hard to fathom how someone who couldn’t face up to the Lavrov shit-sack successfully is now the one in charge. If there’s any justice in this world, she will push the Conservative Party into deserved political oblivion.
There’s a school of thought that the current spending/debtathon is part of a scorched-earth policy, ie a timebomb under the next government. I favour the ideology-driven-incompetence theory myself.
Probably a bit of both.
The Bank of England has put up interest rates to curb borrowing it doesn’t seem to have stopped this ‘government’ from eye watering borrowing.

Roberto Saviano, in his excellent article (above) about today’s election in Italy, writes:
The far right can succeed in Italy because the left has failed, exactly as in much of the world, to offer credible visions or strategies. The left asks people to vote against the right, but it lacks a political vision or an economic alternative. The left sounds elitist when it communicates, while the right has found a hypersimplified discourse: keywords, slogans, concepts reduced to the most basic, especially on migrants, from whose violence and terrorism Italians, it seems, must be saved.
I also get the impression from Twitter that in Britain the left is far more divided than it is in Italy, with the left and right of the Labour party pathetically hurling insults at each other, leaving the Conservatives to get on with things.

Not untrue at all, in my experience.

On the bright side, Italian PMs are in and out pretty quickly. Hope Meloni
won’t buck the trend.

Is she pledging to make the trains run on time?
Gary says
Surprisingly Italian trains are actually really good these days. Fast, clean, very cheap and on time.

Maybe if a train could be made to run over Truss and her mob?
